The Gradient Counters are easily among the most powerful abilities at your disposal in Clair Obscur Expedition 33. While parries and counters can be quite effective in combat, they don’t hold a candle to the Gradient Counters when it comes to sheer DPS you can dish out. The catch? Pulling off a successful Gradient Counter is significantly more difficult compared to the good ol’ parry.

The timing for the Gradient Counter is way tighter, with a very small margin of error. However, if you do successfully pull off a Gradient Counter, you will be rewarded with upwards of 9000 in terms of damage. In fact, with a marked target, you can essentially dish out 9999 physical damage with a Gradient Counter.

And while it might feel a bit overwhelming at first, performing a Grandient Counter is quite easy, as long as you know the basics. Here’s a comprehensive guide on the Gradient Counters in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 to help you easily master it.

The ability to Gradient Counter is unlocked automatically after meeting with Verso. It’s essentially another type of parry, which you can perform by pressing RT or R2. However, unlike parries and regular counters, you cannot perform a Gradient Counter on regular attacks. A Gradient Counter can only be performed on very specific attacks.

Thankfully, these special attacks can be identified quite easily, as when an enemy performs this, they’re highlighted in a gold-colored silhouette and the screen briefly turns black and white. Unlike parries, there’s no buffer animation associated with Gradient Counters. Instead, it’s an instant counter with a very small margin of error.

Furthermore, you cannot use Gradient Counter against every enemy type either. Most flying enemies do not perform attacks that can be tackled with a Gradient Counter. However, as you progress through the game, you will find more and more enemies that incorporate a charged combo in their movesets, which can be tackled with a Gradient Counter. Additionally, most end-game bosses usually feature attacks and even combos, which can be tackled with a Gradient Counter.

It should be noted that these special attacks cannot be dodged or parried. The only way to avoid getting hit by the special attacks is to use a well-timed Gradient Counter. However, using elemental spells, you can minimize the number of special attacks an enemy can perform.

There’s a rather easy way to successfully perform a Gradient Counter. Essentially, as soon as you see an enemy charge their special combo, get ready to press RT or R2. However, only press the button after the enemy starts moving in its “charged” state. Once you press the counter button, keep it pressed and only let go after a Gradient Counter is initiated.

It will take some time to get the hang of the mechanics, but with some practice, you will master Gradient Counters in no time. If you’re looking for enemies to practice Gradient Counter, you can revisit the Battlefield via the Continent map.
