Discover the secretive process of creating Black Soul Gems from Grand Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered to Soul Trap NPCs.

Soul gems in Oblivion Remastered allow you to capture the soul of creatures that are killed while the Soul Trap effect is active. A soul gem can contain a single soul equal to or lower in tier than itself. You can then use filled soul gems to create and charge enchanted equipment like a profiteering Grim Reaper.
However, to become a true reaper of souls, you will need to acquire Black Soul Gems capable of capturing human souls. Creating these dark gems requires placing Grand Soul Gems at altars during the Shade of the Revenant.
Oblivion Remastered: Black Soul Gem Creation Guide

Black Soul Gems are a rare type of soul gem that can capture the souls of NPCs. They are created using Grand Soul Gems and are equal to them in all respects except for their unique ability. Black Soul Gems have a capacity of 1600 and can capture Grand, Greater, Common, Lesser, and Petty souls. Although Black Soul Gems can be found as extremely rare drops, a more reliable way to procure them is to create them yourself.
Shade of the Revenant
Black Soul Gems can only be created once every eight days during the Shade of the Revenant, which starts at midnight and lasts 24 hours on the following dates:
Days Passed | Calendar date |
---|---|
1 | Last Seed 27 |
9 | Hearthfire 4 |
17 | Hearthfire 12 |
25 | Hearthfire 20 |
33 | Hearthfire 28 |
41 | Frostfall 6 |
49 | Frostfall 14 |
57 | Frostfall 22 |
65 | Frostfall 30 |
73 | Sun’s Dusk 7 |
81 | Sun’s Dusk 15 |
89 | Sun’s Dusk 23 |
The days past section refers to the number of days that have passed since the beginning of the game. The Black Soul Gem can be created even after the 89th in-game day by referring to the given calendar dates.
Black Soul Gem Creation

Here is the step-by-step breakdown of how to make a Black Soul Gem:
- Reach any one of the four Necromancy altars marked on the map during the Shade of the Revenant. These are the Dark Fissure, Fort Istirus, Fort Linchal, and Wendelbek altars.
- The Altars will have a red pillar of ethereal light over them in the sky.
- Interact with the Altar to open its interface.
- Place Grand Soul Gems in the Altar.
- Use the Soul Trap spell on the Altar with the Grand Soul Gems inside. All Grand Soul Gems will turn into Black Soul Gems.
- Open the Altar again and retrieve the Black Soul Gems.
How To Use Black Soul Gems
When you have an empty Black Soul Gem in your inventory, cast Soul Trap on an NPC or apply the effect with a weapon enchanted with Soul Trap, such as the sword Umbra. When the NPC dies, their soul will fill the Black Soul Gem. An NPC’s soul counts as Grand and fills a Black Soul Gem to capacity. Once a Black Soul Gem is used to recharge or create an enchanted item, it is consumed. Azura’ Star is the only soul gem that can be reused.
