Team Rocket’s Mewtwo Ex threatens to be a powerful force in the TCG meta, even though its ability, Power Saver, acts as a restriction. Thanks to this ability, at least four Team Rocket Pokemon need to be in play on your side of the field. However, this isn’t much of an issue for two reasons. For starters, the Destined Rivals expansion has introduced several great Team Rocket Pokemon to utilize, so adding these cards isn’t just a chore. Secondly, this Mewtwo has a high HP stat for a Basic Pokemon, making it very hard to one-shot. This lets Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex set up and attack much faster.

Ideal Starting Hand
On your first turn, try to get four Team Rocket Pokemon in play. The best options for this are Tarantoula, Articuno, and Mewtwo. Getting Team Rocket’s Proton is excellent here, as it can be used on the first turn and helps draw three Team Rocket Pokemon of your choice. As the only non-Team Rocket card in this deck, Lillie’s Clefairy ex is perhaps the least ideal card to bring into play early.
Key Cards in Team Rocket’s Mewtwo Ex Deck in Pokemon TCG
The strategy for this deck is as follows:
- Mewtwo is the main attacker of this deck, with Spidops serving as a secondary Single Prize attacker that can pick up an Energy discarded when Mewtwo uses its move Erasure Ball.
- Articuno protects the bench from indirect effects, Murkrow acts as an extra Supporter drawer, Clefairy gives opposing Dragons like Dragapult and Raging Bolt a Psychic weakness, and Mimikyu copies any potential Tera attacks. However, Articuno is the mandatory one out of all four, with the rest to be used if the situation arises.
- For Supporter cards, Ariana is the best of the bunch, letting players draw up to eight cards if all the Pokemon on your side of the field are Team Rocket Pokemon. Archer and Iono disrupt the opponent’s hand, Proton is a godsend if you get him on the first turn, and Giovanni helps you move around any Pokemon you need while disrupting your opponent’s board.
- For tools, you will need to decide between power or longevity, as attaching a Maximum Belt will deal more damage to opposing ex Pokemon, but forgoing that for Bravery Charm makes Mewtwo harder to knock out.
- Team Rocket’s Transceiver is great to get your hands on Rocket Supporters, while Team Rocket’s Factory helps draw cards if a Rocket Supporter was already played.
- Team Rocket Energy acts as Double Colorless Energy for Rocket Pokemon, while Grass Energy is there to help Spidops attack.
Best Matchups
As this deck has Mewtwo as its main attacker and lets players draw cards quickly, it can work relatively fast. This makes this deck suitable for players looking to be aggressive and push hard from the start.
Since this is primarily a Psychic deck, it works well against Fighting-type decks. Spidops, as a Grass-type secondary attacker, also deals with Fighting-types as well as some Water-types.
Counters to Team Rocket’s Mewtwo Ex Deck in Pokemon TCG
This deck is very reliant on Team Rocket Pokemon and Supporters to succeed. So there is a bit of inflexibility concerning non-Team Rocket cards. For example, Lillie’s Clefairy ex can essentially become dead weight if not dealing with a Dragon deck.
Besides that, this deck struggles with Darkness-type decks due to Mewtwo’s weakness to them.
