Pony Express Challenge in Dead Rails
The Pony Express Challenge in Dead Rails completely removes the train from your playthrough. Your goal is to complete the game without touching or interacting with the train at all. This includes boarding it, managing fuel, deploying defenses, or relying on it for transport. Instead, you must depend on a horse for mobility and find ways to survive in open terrain.
To start off, pick the Cowboy class. It costs 50 Bonds, but it comes with a saddled horse. This removes the risk of wandering on foot early in the game, where you’re highly vulnerable. While it’s technically possible to walk and search for a horse, that approach could prove dangerous and painstakingly slow.
Once you begin, ignore all fuel-related items. Coal, oil, or any fuel drops are worthless at the moment because there’s no train to power. Similarly, defense items like turrets, barriers, and barbed wire also doesn’t have much utility. Without the train, you have nowhere to place them.
Instead, focus on collecting armor as early as possible. Since you’re exposed and mobile, personal defense becomes essential. Good armor increases your survivability, especially during the final battle when there’s no cover.
While riding, use your maneuverability to your advantage. Horses let you move faster than most enemies. Practice riding forward while aiming and shooting backward to kill melee enemies. This skill helps you avoid taking unnecessary damage.
Avoiding Enemies
Be cautious around Outlaws. These enemies ride horses just like you, and their speed matches yours. They can also shoot from a distance, so it’s best to avoid them altogether. During the day, it’s easier to spot and steer clear of them. At night, use a lantern or other light source to avoid getting disoriented or wandering into ambushes.
Also, skip the Vampire class unless you’re doing a night-only run. The Vampire’s speed might seem helpful, but its weakness to sunlight makes daytime movement a liability.
Finally, prepare for the bridge counter event. This event will prove harder without the train. You won’t have mounted guns or solid cover. So keep moving and prioritize taking out enemies with firearms first. If you’re well-armored and make smart use of your horse’s speed, you can push through the final fight.
To win this challenge, focus on mobility, avoid unnecessary combat, and adapt your strategy to a no-train environment. The goal isn’t just survival—it’s smart movement and focused aggression.
