The King Is Watching is an interesting take on the real-time strategy roguelite, where you’ll build an empire full of people, resources, and armies. However, the most important role within this empire is that of the king. That’s because your subjects will only work when the king looks at them. Without his watchful eyes on them, they’ll simply slack off and get nothing done. This is where the Gaze system comes into play. In the following guide, we’ll learn how Gaze in The King Is Watching works and what it does.

The king’s gaze is what keeps the entire empire running, literally. So, as the king, you will need to focus your gaze on the units or buildings that you want to work the most. For instance, when the king gazes at a building, it will slowly start producing resources. As long as the building is outside the gaze area, its production will be zero.

The game starts off with the king having a gaze radius of just three tiles. However, you can upgrade this to reach a maximum of six tiles. Since the Gaze system is tied to how many resources your kingdom produces and how efficient the units are, you need to upgrade Gaze as soon as you can. By the end, you will be able to double your production capacity.

Thankfully, you can move buildings in and out of the king’s gaze as needed. You’ll primarily want to focus the gaze on buildings that produce resources and upgrades. However, from time to time, you’ll also want your unit-producing structures within the gaze area too.

How To Best Use Gaze in The King Is Watching

The best way to use the Gaze system is to move your unit-producing buildings into the gaze tiles. Keep them there until they reach their unit limit, and then remove them from the gaze area. After that, simply focus on moving the resource- and upgrade-producing buildings into the gaze tiles. These are the buildings you want to prioritize for steady production. When you’ve depleted certain units significantly, you can again consider moving the corresponding unit-producing building into the gaze for a while.

The idea is to focus heavily on the production of critical items such as food or construction materials. So, always prioritize these buildings when it comes to gaze. At the same time, you shouldn’t neglect expanding the limit of the unit-producing buildings. As the game progresses, you’ll require more units, and with the higher limit, you won’t need to swap unit-producing buildings as frequently as in the initial hours.
