Learn which Pokemon you can use to defeat Steven, the postgame boss of Pokemon Emerald after you become champion.

Steven is not the Champion of Pokemon Emerald. Instead, he is similar to Red in the Johto games, a final boss for you to face once you have become Champion yourself. So you will need to prepare yourself and pick some of the best Pokemon available in the game before facing him in battle.
Guide To Defeat Steven in Pokemon Emerald Overview

Pokemon | Level | Ability | Moves |
---|---|---|---|
Skarmory | 77 | Keen Eye | Toxic, Spikes, Aerial Ace, Steel Wing |
Claydol | 75 | Levitate | Reflect, Light Screen, Ancient Power, Earthquake |
Aggron | 76 | Sturdy | Thunder, Earthquake, Solar Beam, Dragon Claw |
Cradily | 76 | Suction Cups | Giga Drain, Ancient Power, Ingrain, Confuse Ray |
Armaldo | 76 | Battle Armor | Water Pulse, Ancient Power, Aerial Ace, Slash |
Metagross | 78 | Clear Body | Earthquake, Psychic, Meteor Mash, Shadow Ball |
Steven’s team consists of multiple Steel, Rock, and Ground-types, which complement each other well. For instance, Claydol is immune to the Electric-type moves that Skarmory is weak to. Similarly, Aggron shrugs off the Ice moves that Claydol struggles against. However, his team can mostly be hit neutrally with Water-type attacks, with a little support from Ground, Electric, and Fighting-type moves.

How To Use the Best Team To Defeat Steven in Pokemon Emerald
- Swampert: Swampert is one of the best Pokemon to bring against Steven thanks to its dual STABs. It can use Surf to hit Claydol, Aggron, and Armaldo for super effective damage. Similarly, its Earthquake hits Metagross hard.
- Camerupt: Camerupt isn’t a particularly great Pokemon, but it has access to useful Fire moves like Eruption and Overheat. This lets it act as a lead against Steven’s Skarmory before it sets up too many layers of Spikes.
- Manectric: Manectric is a fast Electric-type that can be used to handle Skarmory with Magnet-boosted Thunderbolt.
- Breloom: Breloom is an excellent Fighting-type with access to priority Mach Punch. Breloom is here to deal with Steven’s Cradily as well as put some of his powerful Pokemon to sleep.
- Gardevoir: While Gardevoir’s Psychic STAB isn’t hitting anything for super effective damage, it hits Claydol, Cradily, and Armaldo for decent neutral damage after a Calm Mind boost.
- Flygon: Flygon not only has powerful Ground STAB in Earthquake, but thanks to Levitate it can switch in easily regardless of the number of Spikes Skarmory has set on the field.
Best IVs and EVs To Train for This Team
Try to get Pokemon with max IVs. As for EVs, in Generation 3 a lot of these Pokemon are mixed attackers due to moves being physical or special based on their type. So try to mix EVs while training them. However, Manectric benefits from high Speed EVs.
Tips and Tricks To Defeat Steven in Pokemon Emerald

- Steven’s Claydol has access to dual screens, which, if it sets up, will make it harder for your Pokemon to KO it. Use Breloom’s Brick Break to shatter them.
- Several Pokemon like Manectric need Hidden Power for coverage, so catch multiple Pokemon to ensure you get the one you need.
- Breloom doesn’t learn Spore if it evolves from Shroomish before level 54. So you may need to hold on to its evolution for that time.
