Radeon RX 9070 GRE vs RX 7900 GRE: Detailed Comparison

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE is based on the latest RDNA 4 architecture, which brings a huge performance boost in both rasterization and ray tracing. On the other hand, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE is designed on the older RDNA 3 architecture, but it has more cores and memory. Let’s check out the rest of their specs to get a general idea of what they are capable of before we start comparing them.

The Radeon RX 7900 GRE has a vastly higher number of shader cores, RT cores, TMUs, ROPs, memory, and memory bandwidth. One would naturally think it will be the faster GPU compared to the new Radeon RX 9070 GRE. However, higher specs don’t always translate to real-world performance in games. Moreover, the latest Radeon graphics card features a more modern architecture, which provides it with a distinct advantage. That’s why we must compare them in actual benchmarks.

Performance Comparison

It’s time we put the specs aside and look at the actual performance difference between the two GPUs in games. Here’s how the Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 7900 GRE perform:

GamesRadeon RX 9070 GRERadeon RX 7900 GRE
PUBG109 FPS121 FPS
Silent Hill 250 FPS45 FPS
God of War Ragnarok130 FPS115 FPS

Microsoft Flight Simulator 202470 FPS61 FPS

Note: The two GPUs tested here were evaluated at a 1440p resolution with High/Ultra Settings, unless otherwise specified. All the FPS numbers were sourced from the Hardware for Gamers channel on YouTube. For the tests, the two graphics cards were paired with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU.

Both Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 7900 GRE performed almost equally on average in 10 games. Now, that is actually impressive for the new Radeon graphics card. Despite having fewer shader cores, TMUs, ROPs, and other specs, it delivered a similar performance to the Radeon RX 7900 GRE.

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE scored higher in the latest story-based games. On the other hand, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE delivered more FPS in esports titles, such as Silent Hill 2, Helldivers 2, Marvel Rivals, and two other story-based games. However, their performance is extremely similar overall.

Pricing & Availability

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE is only available in China as of this writing, where it is selling for around $540 to $590 (converted). The Radeon RX 7900 GRE was also China-exclusive in the beginning, but it later launched globally for around $550. Therefore, their prices are similar.

Final Verdict on Radeon RX 9070 GRE vs RX 7900 GRE

Both Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 7900 GRE performed equally. They are also priced similarly. Therefore, the better choice would be to get the new Radeon RX 9070 GRE. It has less memory, but its newer architecture should be better in the long run. You should only consider buying the older Radeon RX 7900 GRE if it receives heavy discounts.
