Dragon Age: The Veilguard, much like its predecessors, features a massive array of weapon types for each class/specialization. Although Bioware hasn’t revealed the exact number of weapon types that players can expect in their upcoming title, they did reveal a good majority of them via gameplay trailers, press interviews, and also dedicated weapon showcases. And much like Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Veilguard allows players to equip multiple weapon types at once. In The Veilguard, players can equip and switch between 3 weapons at any given time, as each class (specialization) has its own unique main-hand, off-hand, and alternate weapons.

Although every class is bound to a certain weapon archetype, the game does allow experimenting with different weapon combinations. As such, players can come up with some really intriguing builds simply by equipping different weapon types. Furthermore, Dragon Age: The Veilguard brings a plethora of new weapon types for players to master. Weapons like the Arcane Orbs, Elemental Orbs, and Spellblades are some of the newly debuting weapons in the Dragon Age series. Here’s a list of all the weapon types in Dragon Age: The Veilguard:

  • Arcane Orbs: Arcane Orbs are Mage weapons that offer close-quarters combat options for the class. The Arcane Orb is an off-hand weapon for the Mage.
  • Arcane Staves: Arcane Staves are the main-hand Mage weapon type. It allows the wilder to cast powerful long-range spells from a distance.
  • Elemental Orbs: Elemental Orbs are similar to the Arcane Orbs but with the ability to use elemental spells for close-quarters combat.
  • Elemental Staves: Much like the Arcane Staves, the Elemental Staves are main-hand weapons types that specialize in casting long-range elemental spells.
  • Great Axes: The Great Axes in The Veilguard is similar to the past games. It’s a two-handed weapon for the Warrior class that specializes in breaking enemy armor and also dealing a ton of damage.
  • Longbows: Longbows are main-hand weapons that are capable of shooting arrows over great distances.
  • Shortbows: Shortbows are off-hand/main-hand weapons that specialize in shooting arrows at short distances but with incredible precision.
  • Targes (Shields): Targes are special Shields that serve two different purposes in combat: blocking and counterattacking. The Targes can block incoming projectiles as well as regular attacks, while also serving as an offensive option that can be used to deal damage to the enemy. Targes are off-hand weapons, wielded alongside one-handed melee weapons.
  • Longswords: Longswords are the primary starting weapon for the Warrior class. It offers a balance of damage and agility. While it doesn’t deal as much damage as the Great Axe, it offers a faster moveset.
  • Rapiers: Rapiers are melee weapons that, despite lacking the damaging capability of Great Axes and the Longswords, make up for their shortcomings with their increased agility. The Rapiers can dish out a flurry of attacks, staggering the enemy while also dealing a ton of damage in the process.
  • Mageknives: Mageknives in The Veilguard are melee weapons that can use elemental spells. It’s a hybrid weapon for the Rogue and Mage, offering a melee option while also embracing the spellcasting abilities of said classes.
  • Spellblades: Spellblades are Mage weapons that offer a melee option for the class. The Spellblades deal physical damage to enemies and also have the ability to use short-range elemental spells.
  • Mauls: Mauls are similar to the Great Axes as they specialize in destroying enemy armor. Mauls are main-hand weapons that are slow but deal a ton of damage with every single hit.
  • Scepters: Scepters are Mage weapons that have the ability to cast powerful elemental spells. Scepters in The Veilguard work roughly the same as the past Dragon Age games, with minor tweaks to casting speed.

How many weapon types are there in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?

So far, we know of roughly 14 weapon types that are going to be part of the players’ arsenal in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The list includes everything from the returning classics like the Longswords, Shortbows, Rapiers, Scepters, Mauls, and Mageknives to the newly added Elemental Orbs, Arcane Staves, etc. Each weapon type is categorized into 5 different rarities: Common (Grey), Uncommon (Green), Rare (Blue), Legendary (Orange), and Unique (Red). Here. Common (Grey) is the lowest rarity, and Unique (Red) is the highest. As is the case with most RPGs, higher weapon rarity implies higher overall damage and better elemental and passive perks.

How to obtain weapons in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Weapons in Dragon Age: The Veilguard are obtained via various means. You can obtain weapons by buying them from vendors or Faction-specific stores. As your reputation increases among many of The Veilguard’s Factions, you will unlock new and more powerful weapons. Furthermore, weapons can also be acquired simply by exploring the open parts of the map. Certain optional quests also reward you with weapons, often of higher rarity and with unique perks. Some weapons can also be crafted, granted you obtain the necessary crafting resources as well as the schematics for said weapon type. All weapons can be upgraded as well, which increases the effectiveness of their perks as well as overall damage.
