Why Does My Hero Academia Filler Exist in the First Place?
This is an interesting question because My Hero Academia’s reason for having filler content differs slightly from other popular Shonen titles. For example, the Naruto series has plenty of filler because both the manga and the anime adaptation had a weekly release. Studios usually adapt at least 2-3 chapters for every episode depending on the title. Since this was the case, the studio created anime-original content.
One Piece also has plenty of filler content, some of which are crossovers involving other anime titles. My Hero Academia fillers exist because of their films. The movies aren’t a part of the overarching story. However, they’re set in the same timeline. Therefore, the animation studios decided to connect the films to the anime adaptation. This was also done to promote the films themselves.
Are the My Hero Academia Movies Filler?
This is a bit of a controversial topic that has divided the fanbase. The unspoken rule that is usually followed by the members of the anime and manga community is that the episode/movie is considered canon if and only if it is covered in the manga or the source material. The source material in this case is the manga and therefore, the contents of it determine whether or not the movies are canon. The appearance of Melissa Shields in the manga led to the resurgence of this debate. She was a character who appeared in the World Heroes’ Mission movie.
This technically makes the film canon. However, it is important to note that the movies have almost little to no impact on the overall story. By this, we mean that the fanbase can stick to the anime episodes alone for an optimal viewing experience. Therefore, fans can treat the movies as filler.
