What is Sun Breathing in Demon Slayer? Take a look at the very concept that created the foundation for the Corps’ success.
Demon Slayer, written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge, has an interesting power system. This term refers to the combat mechanics and rules that govern fights in a particular series. Each title comes up with a unique system, and the manner in which these rules govern the flow of a fight determines the quality of a fight. Certain titles have complex mechanics that involve harnessing spiritual energy and manifesting it in the form of physical attacks.
In this case, however, the manner in which fights take place is a lot simpler. Characters in this series use swords to fight demons. However, demons are far superior in physical abilities when we compare them to human beings. Therefore, the author came up with an interesting concept that bridged the gap between humans and demons—Breathing Techniques.
There are several Breathing Techniques in the series, and each of them has an elemental affiliation. What is the Sun Breathing? This is a Breathing Technique that was invented by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Every single Breathing Technique that was shown in the series branched off from the Breath of the Sun.
What Is the Sun Breathing In Demon Slayer?
As mentioned earlier, Sun Breathing was the first-ever Breathing Technique. Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the legendary swordsman from the Sengoku Period, created this technique. He figured out a way to harness breathing to increase the physical capabilities of muscles present within the body. The foundation of Breathing Techniques or Breathing Styles is Total Concentration Breathing. This is a technique that forces the user to expand their lungs, take in more oxygen, and force the heart to pump blood at a faster rate, which excites the muscles and bones. This is the foundation of Breathing Styles. Yoriichi created the Breath of the Sun specifically to kill Muzan. One can observe the structure of Sun Breathing and understand why it was designed to kill Muzan.
There are 13 forms in total. Among the 13 forms, the first 12 are individual moves, and the final move is a combination of all 12 moves performed in succession. There is a reason behind this number. Kibutsuji Muzan has 12 vital organs. Therefore, Sun Breathing is quite literally designed to defeat the Demon King. This is why Tanjiro’s contribution to killing Muzan in the manga series cannot be overstated.
All Forms of the Sun Breathing
As mentioned earlier, there are a total of 13 forms. The first form is called Dance, which is a single vertical slash in its essence. The next form is called Clear Blue Sky, where the user performs a 360-degree slash by rotating their upper body. Following this, we have the Raging Sun. The user performs two horizontal slashes, countering any incoming attacks. The next form is called Burning Bones Summer Flame. The user performs a spiral-like slash to defend themselves from attacks coming at them head-on. Setting Sun Transformation is a move wherein the user performs a backflip and a horizontal slash, which decapitates the enemy.
Solar Heat Haze causes an illusion that surprises the enemy by masking the true length of the blade. Beneficent Radiance is a form that allows the user to spiral into the air while performing an upward slash on the target. Sunflower Thrust is a move that utilizes a forward thrusting motion, attacking the user with the tip of the sword. Sun Halo Dragon Head Dance is a form that involves consecutive slashes in a fluid motion that can decapitate multiple targets. Fire Wheel is a move that allows the user to flip in the air and perform a slash while they’re located behind the target. Fake Rainbow uses rotational strikes, while Flame Dance uses a 2-strike combo of one vertical and one horizontal slash. The thirteenth form is a combination of all the aforementioned forms performed in succession.
How Many Breathing Styles Are Present in Demon Slayer?
There are a total of 14 Breathing Styles, including Sun Breathing, in the Demon Slayer series. Every single Breathing Style is an offshoot of the Breath of the Sun. Water, Flame, Moon, Thunder, Stone, and Wind are offshoots of Sun Breathing. The Water Breathing Technique gave rise to two more Breathing Styles—Flower and Serpent. The Insect Breathing Technique was derived from the Flower Breathing Technique.
Similarly, Love Breathing was derived from Flame Breathing, while Sound Breathing was derived from Thunder Breathing. Last but not least, there were two Breathing Techniques that were derived from Wind Breathing—Mist and Beast Breathing.
How Many Sun Breathing Users Are There in Demon Slayer?
Since Sun Breathing was the first-ever Breathing Technique, we don’t know the exact number of Sun Breathing users. However, the anime introduced 4 known users of this Breathing Style. Yoriichi Tsugikuni was the creator and therefore, the most prominent user of this style. Tanjiro Kamado, the protagonist of the series, is another user. While he started out with Water Breathing, his affinity towards the Breath of the Sun was evident as the series progressed.
Tanjiro Kamado’s father, Tanjuro Kamado, was another user. He performed the Hinokami Kagura, which was, in its essence, Sun Breathing. Sumiyoshi passed this dance down for generations. He was Tanjiro’s ancestor from the Sengoku period who met Yoriichi. Sumiyoshi learned the Sun Breathing Technique from Yoriichi by imitating his moves. These are all the known users of Sun Breathing in the Demon Slayer series.
Conclusion
Sun Breathing is the most important Breathing Style. This is due to its design as it targets all 12 of Muzan’s vital organs. It also gave rise to a plethora of Breathing Styles that suited certain combatants based on their fighting style. This was the very thing that paved the way for the Demon Slayer Corps’ victory against Kibutsuji Muzan in the manga series.
