Did Luffy defeat Kizaru in One Piece? Explore their intense battle, its outcome, and how Kizaru’s strength compares to other Admirals.
The Egghead Arc of One Piece delivered several exciting fights, right from Garp facing the Blackbeard Pirates to the Straw Hats fighting the Five Elders. Among all this excitement, one equally exhilarating battle was Luffy’s fight with Kizaru.
As a powerful antagonist of the series, Kizaru’s matchup against Luffy was highly anticipated in Egghead Island. So, who won in their battle?
Luffy was able to defeat Kizaru during their battle in One Piece, and he was also able to do it rapidly. Let’s explore how this happened.
Who is Kizaru in One Piece
Known for his laid-back and carefree attitude, Kizaru is one of the strongest Marine Admirals in One Piece. His real name is Borsalino, and he was introduced as an antagonist in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc. He later went on to fight the Whitebeard Pirates at Marineford.
Kizaru admitted that he was a cog in the machine and did not try to change the way the world worked. He obediently followed orders from above, which led him to play the role of the major antagonist in Egghead.
Despite his condescending and easygoing nature, Kizaru was shown to be more humane in the Egghead Arc, even going as far as shouting at Akainu.
Why Did Luffy and Kizaru Fight
Luffy and Kizaru’s fight was a clash of ideologies – one for freedom and the other for the establishment.
When Luffy and the Straw Hats arrived at Egghead and met Vegapunk, they learned of forbidden knowledge regarding the Void Century and an advanced ancient civilization. Since Vegapunk knew too much, the World Government decided to eliminate him and sent the Marines along with Admiral Kizaru.
To stop Vegapunk’s research on the Void Century permanently, Kizaru first set foot on the island and defeated Sentomaru. Shortly after, he ran into Luffy, who was assisting Vegapunk. Sensing the dangerous presence of Kizaru, Luffy decided to make the first move and instantly struck him.
How Did Luffy Defeat Kizaru
Luffy’s battle against Kizaru was a dynamic yet shockingly short one. While Kizaru was able to deal with Luffy’s Gear Four and a barrage of attacks, he could not fight back against Gear Five. Kizaru attempted using clones and lasers to strike down Vegapunk and Bonney but ultimately failed. Luffy’s unique application of Gear Five made him larger and easily grab hold of the Admiral.
Even after Saint Saturn intervened in their battle, Kizaru could never truly get the upper hand on Luffy and was crushed into a disc before being thrown at a Marine ship. After this, he was too exhausted to return to the fight and conceded his loss.
Many fans believe that Kizaru’s defeat could be attributed to Luffy’s new power as well as his own complex feelings. Kizaru had known Vegapunk for a long time and was also friends with Kuma. Since he was now tasked with killing some of the people he held dear, his mask of “relaxation” was slowly crumbling. This caused him to not go all-out in the battle and be taken advantage of by Gear Five.
There are arguments that the battle was a draw since Luffy ran out of juice in between and had to restock on food. While these are valid, the final result was Kizaru laying flat on a ship while Luffy and his crew successfully took down an Elder. Considering this, it is not an overstatement to say Luffy defeated Kizaru and the Marines.
Kizaru’s Strengths and Abilities
As an Admiral with years of experience and several Marines under him, Kizaru is a very powerful figure in One Piece. He had eaten the Pika Pika no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that gave him the power of light.
Through this, he could move at the speed of light, use light laser beams, and set off destructive explosions. In battle, he was known to create swords made of his light ability. With this, he proved an even match for Rayleigh – an acclaimed fighter from the Roger Pirates.
Additionally, Kizaru could use various kinds of Haki. His Armament Haki allowed him to negate shockwaves and enhanced his already durable body. Kizaru also had Observation Haki, which let him sense Saint Saturn’s presence in Egghead.
Due to his practical mindset, quick movements, and exposure to the battlefield, Kizaru would be a difficult fight for anyone in One Piece.
Is Kizaru Stronger Than the Other Admirals
While there is no definitive answer to this since most Admirals haven’t fought each other, it is safe to say that Kizaru is at least among the three strongest.
We have already explored what makes Kizaru so strong, but he is still not the strongest in the Marines. Based on the existing powers of the characters, we can say that both Sengoku and Akainu are stronger than Kizaru in One Piece.
Sengoku is a legendary figure of the Marines who was its former Fleet Admiral. He had the Hito Hito no Mi, which transformed him into a Golden Buddha and drastically increased his physical powers.
However, Sengoku stepped down from the Fleet Admiral position after the Marineford Arc. Among the current Admirals, only Akainu is believed to be stronger than him. With his Magu Magu no Mi, which gave him fearsome Magma abilities, Akainu had already defeated Aokiji in battle. He is also infamous for his intense personality and for having killed Ace.
Since Kizaru had spoken up to him in the Egghead Arc, we can assume that he does not completely fear Akainu. Nevertheless, while their battle might be close, based on current accomplishments, it would be reasonable to believe Akainu would win.
Conclusion
Luffy’s battle with Kizaru proved the huge change in power dynamics in One Piece. Despite having become an Emperor, the moment most fans realized Luffy’s growth in strength was when he could defeat Kizaru easily.
At the same time, Kizaru is still a very powerful figure whom we don’t know much about personally. Since the end of the Egghead Arc signaled a moment of transformation for his character, fans can look forward to the role he plays in the Final Saga of One Piece.
