The heart of the series lies with its protagonist, Yuji Itadori. Thrown into Jujutsu Sorcery after sharing a body with Sukuna, we follow the challenges he faces in this whole new world.
Along with Itadori, there is a cast of equally memorable characters who accompany him through the series. However, does Jujutsu Kaisen have a deuteragonist?
Jujutsu Kaisen does have a deuteragonist, and that is the talented descendant of the Zenin Clan – Megumi Fushiguro. Let us look into what makes him the deuteragonist of the series.
Why Megumi Fushiguro Is the Deuteragonist in Jujutsu Kaisen
A deuteragonist is typically defined as a secondary protagonist and is the second most important character in the series. Along with assisting the protagonist, the deuteragonist has development and goals of their own, which are often comparable to the main character.
Megumi Fushiguro perfectly fulfills the role while also being the opposing personality to Itadori in the cast. While the protagonist is new to Jujutsu, Megumi is a skilled Sorcerer wielding his clan’s prized Ten Shadows Technique.
He is a practical and aloof character who makes the best possible decision according to each situation. This contrasts with Itadori’s nature of reckless selflessness, where he would sacrifice himself for the sake of his friends.
Through the course of the series, however, Itadori eventually rubbed off on him and made Megumi open up his shell. He became less objective and was even willing to throw his own life away while summoning Maharoga in the Shibuya Arc.
Along with the codependent relationship he shares with Itadori, Megumi has some of the most screen time in the series and is relevant in each arc. His connection to the strongest characters, such as Gojo and Sukuna, also makes him fit the bill as another protagonist, or in this case, the deuteragonist.
Megumi Fushiguro’s Role in Jujutsu Kaisen
Megumi Fushiguro is deeply tied to Jujutsu Kaisen‘s narrative, coming from a prestigious family and training under Gojo. He mainly became a Sorcerer to save his sister Tsumiki from a Curse.
As we have already mentioned, Megumi is hugely impactful in Itadori’s life and goes through plenty of development. However, the biggest role of Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen came at the end of the Culling Games Arc.
From the start of the series, Sukuna was dissatisfied with his inability to control Itadori’s body. He was also fascinated by Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique. As a result, during the Culling Games, Sukuna finally left the protagonist’s body and took over Megumi’s.
To make matters worse, he killed Tsumiki with Megumi’s body. This cast the deuteragonist’s soul into the abyss while giving the King of Curses full control over the body. By controlling Megumi’s body and using Maharoga, Sukuna could kill Gojo in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc too.
Hence, apart from his role as a Sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi’s biggest impact in the series is the chaos Sukuna caused using his body.
Does Megumi Fushiguro Survive by the End of the Jujutsu Kaisen Manga?
Since Sukuna took over Megumi’s body and also came close to restoring his original form, fans might wonder if Megumi was able to survive in the manga.
They can rest assured, as Megumi Fushiguro survives by the end of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. The key to Sukuna’s control of his body was that Megumi would give up his consciousness. However, after a heart-to-heart talk with Itadori, he becomes convinced to fight back.
With Nobara’s impromptu return and a barrage of Itadori’s Black Flash punches, Sukuna finally gets separated from Megumi’s body. In a last-bid effort, Sukuna tries guilting Megumi into succumbing again since he killed his own sister and had nothing to live for.
Despite this, Megumi realized that his existence was key to several other innocent people in the world. He stopped living for himself and started living for others. This completed the complex character arc of Sukuna inhabiting Megumi Fushiguro’s body, as the Curse was dispelled outside and ended up dying.
By the finale of the series, Megumi is seen nursing his wounds while laughing again in the presence of Nobara and Itadori.
Why Nobara and Gojo Are Not Deuteragonists in Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen has an abundant cast of characters, each with significant influence on the plot and compelling layers of growth. Due to this, it makes them the protagonists of their “own story” while playing a major part in the series. This leads to the question of why they aren’t deuteragonists in Jujutsu Kaisen.
The two most prominent characters in the series after Itadori and Megumi are undoubtedly Nobara and Gojo. While the former is part of the main trio, the latter serves as their mentor and the strongest Sorcerer in the series.
Unfortunately, in Nobara’s case, she is taken out of action after the Shibuya Arc and only makes her return during the end of the Shinjuku Showdown. While certainly an enjoyable supporting character, Nobara also carries lesser narrative weight than the others.
Gojo, on the other hand, is a universally beloved character. His overwhelming power largely impacts the events of the series. However, even when we don’t consider his death in the final arc, Gojo is a guide in Jujutsu Kaisen. His life is largely exposed through flashbacks while his role is to nurture the next generation of Sorcerers.
Similar to Kakashi in Naruto or Urahara in Bleach, he is indispensable to the plot but mainly serves to complement the final development of the protagonist and deuteragonist.
