Everything you need to know about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and whether it uses Unreal Engine 5, or not.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the upcoming new title from MachineGames, is just a few days away from release. Unlike MachineGames’ past titles, i.e. the modern Wolfenstein series, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a linear action-adventure game, as opposed to a first-person shooter.
However, given the game’s first-person perspective as well as the high-octane action sequences showcased in the gameplay trailers, it’s natural for some players to mistake the game for a traditional FPS, akin to MachineGames’ past work. MachineGames is also known to make excellent use of id Software’s id Tech engine in their Wolfenstein games.
MachineGames’ previous titles, Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus were built using id Tech. However, given the genre shift for their upcoming title, it won’t be surprising for MachineGames to turn to different game engines. After all, other Bethesda Softworks studios did ditch id Tech in favor of Unreal Engine (Redfall and Hi-Fi Rush being the prime examples).
Surprisingly enough, MachineGames is sticking with id Tech for their Indiana Jones game. The game essentially makes use of an improved version of the engine that was developed for Doom Eternal.
Indiana Jones and The Great Circle Game Engine
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is built using id Tech 7. The id Tech 7 engine was first used in 2020’s Doom Eternal. The engine was later iterated upon to add support for current-generation consoles. One of the biggest improvements featured in id Tech 7 compared to previous versions of the engine is the removal of MegaTexture pipeline. MegaTexture was essentially introduced in id Tech 4 to facilitate texture streaming on HDDs.
However, using MegaTextures comes at the cost of increased file size and frequent texture pop-in. In fact, texture pop-in was one of the biggest issues in id Tech 4 games, including Wolfenstein.
However, with the consoles and PC hardware eventually making a switch to SSDs, there’s barely any benefit to MegaTextures. Doom Eternal ditching MegaTextures showed massive improvements, not only in performance but also in texture streaming.
Furthermore, with the current-generation update, Doom Eternal (and id tech , as an extension) also received support for ray-tracing. Furthermore, id Tech 7 also featuers vastly improved global illumination, something most game engines usually struggle with. While id Tech 7 does have its fair share of benefits over other engines, there are a few shortcomings too.
The biggest issue with id Tech 7 is its significantly higher VRAM requirements. Furthermore, the engine is also very CPU intensive, despite being designed for linear arcade shooters like Doom. And much like Doom Eternal, Indiana Jones features some hefty PC system requirements.
Indiana Jones and The Great Circle PC Sytem Requirements
As of writing this article, only the minimum specifications for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle have been revealed. Even then, the game seems quite demanding, especially for a linear action-adventure game. The minimum GPU requirement for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is an RTX 2060 Super, AMD RX 6600, or something equivalent, with 8 GB of VRAM.
Furthermore, the CPU requirements are also quite high, with AMD Ryzen 5 (3600-5600) mentioned as minimum specifications. That being said, here are the official system requirements for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle:
