Spirit of the Samurai releases on Steam and Epic Games Store on December 12, 2024, but will not be available on Xbox Game Pass.
As the Samurai fever has gripped the video game industry, fans have been craving more games that put you in the shoes of the honourable Japanese warriors. With Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Ghost of Yotei a while away, Spirit of the Samurai aims to fill the void. The game is a 2D Metroidvania action game that is fairly ambitious in nature, featuring a story that deep dives into the history of the Samurai as well as Japanese folklore.
The game will be released on PC on December 12, 2024, and will be available for purchase on Steam and on the Epic Games Store. Spirit of the Samurai, however, will not be available on Xbox Game Pass. There has been no word from the developers about it.
What Is the Spirit of the Samurai About?
The spirit of the Samurai walks a thin line, blending Japanese folklore with elements of the region’s history. The game is a 2D Metroidvania action game built on Unity that sees you navigate the land of the rising sun ridden by spirits. Spirit of the Samurai also boasts stop-motion cinematics made with love and care to bring a cinematic experience to the player akin to what one would expect from the likes of Kurosawa.
Three Playable Characters
You are Takeshi, a Samurai tasked with rescuing your village from the Oni. You are accompanied by a powerful yet cute little cat and a tiny spirit companion. The gameplay in Spirit of the Samurai alternates between playing through tense encounters with Takeshi and more platform-heavy yet light-hearted encounters with the kitty and the spirit.
“Fight through the undead hordes as three distinct characters: Takeshi, a skilled samurai; Kodama, a brave but tiny spirit; and Chisai, a warrior cat. Each interacts with the world in a different way, from intense sword combat to precise platforming and exploration,” the developers state in the game’s description.
Japanese Folklore Meets Action Gameplay
The Oni in the game are inspired and derived from Japanese folklore. The developers, however, give it enough of a twist to give them a unique horror spin. “Fight against his army of tengu, undead, and the horrifying Jorogumo, all inspired by Japanese mythology, in a unique, brutal, stop-motion cinematic adventure,” the developers said.
You will be fighting through hordes of these Onis using the game’s in-depth combat system. You can cycle between a katana, a yari spear, and a long-ranged bow. These weapons will decide how up close and personal the fights will be, letting you choose how you play.
