Marvel Rivals is right around the corner, and the hero shooter genre looks primed to become super. The brand-new Marvel hero shooter will feature characters from the Marvel universe and will throw them into a 6v6 brawl for supremacy. Marvel Rivals will be free to play and is set for release on December 6, 2024. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC. Unfortunately, the game will not be available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One. There is no news of a future port of the game hitting these platforms either.

What is Marvel Rivals

Familiar Faces

Marvel Rivals is the new hero shooter aiming to revitalize and refresh the genre. The game, developed and published by NetEase Games, puts you in the shoes of your favorite Marvel superheroes, antiheroes, and supervillains and lets you duke it out in a 6v6 PVP setting. The game is set to launch with 33 playable characters, with more to be added later.

The game’s launch roster includes popular heavyweights such as Spider-Man, Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine, Venom, Hulk, Doctor Strange, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Hawkeye, Magneto, and the Punisher. Other members in the roster include Hela, Iron Fist, Jeff the Land Shark, Loki, Luna Snow, Magik, Mantis, Moon Knight, Namor, Peni Parker, Psylocke, Scarlet Witch, Squirrel Girl, Star-Lord, Storm, Cloak and Dagger, and the Winter Soldier.

In the Spirit of Overwatch

When Marvel Rivals was first announced, it did not take fans long to tag it as an “Overwatch clone,” and with the very little information we had on the game, it did not seem like the game would beat the allegations either. The game featured similar 6v6 team-based gameplay, similar player roles, and a very familiar aesthetic.

Since the announcement, however, the game has shown us bits and pieces that distinguish it enough to have its own identity. The game, to the joy of most Marvel fans, pays tribute to the decades-long history and lore of the comics. More importantly, however, the game implements and integrates this lore into gameplay through the use of team-ups.

Team-ups, as the name suggests, see two characters in your squad team up for super moves that deal high amounts of damage. The catch is, however, that these team-ups can only be formed between characters that share history in Marvel lore. This unique mechanic helps Rivals pave its own path and also rewards long-term fans with super cool abilities.
