Here’s a list of gameplay features that the upcoming Fable reboot should include to revitalize the series and please the entire fanbase.
The Fable reboot is coming out on Windows PCs and Xbox Series X|S in 2025. However, we still know little about it, since Microsoft hasn’t revealed much. We’ve only got a cinematic trailer, which didn’t give us any clue as to how the game will look. Nevertheless, fans have come up with their own wish lists, including features they’d like to see in the upcoming title.
This includes some well-loved gameplay aspects from the previous titles, as well as new features that would make the upcoming game feel unique. So, here’s a list of the best gameplay features that the Fable reboot should have.
Essential Gameplay Features That Should Be Present in Fable
1. Gray Morality
If you’ve played the Fable games, you should already be aware of how morality (called Alignment in-game) plays a major role in the gameplay. You get to make good or evil choices throughout the game, in almost all story and side quests. Your regular actions in the game can also decide your morality. The decisions you make affect the game’s ending, but they also have an impact on the game world.
Another side effect of morality is your character’s appearance. The more ‘good deeds’ you do, the more angelic you look, and the more evil you become, the more demonic your character looks. Now, this restricts your playthroughs to a good or evil run. This also means that you can either play as a cartoonishly evil character or a saintly one.
With the new Fable game, the devs should add an intermediary gray morality that provides an alternate route. Not only will this keep things fresh, but it also allows for more nuance in decision-making.
2. Marriage and Children
Before Skyrim popularized the idea of living with a spouse in a fantasy setting, Fable was the first to make this feature seem immersive enough in an RPG. Fable 2 enhanced this feature further by adding children. So, in Fable 2 and 3, you can get married and have children, who will even retain some of your character’s and their spouse’s physical characteristics.
This is a revolutionary feature that should be brought back in the Fable reboot. Marriage and children are some aspects of the franchise that made it so special and adds a bit of immersion that’s hard to find in RPGs nowadays.
3. Landlord Simulation
The Fable games allow you to buy and rent out various properties, a feature that serves as a decent way to make money. The feature seemed quite impressive when it was added to the first Fable title, and it would become a series staple. Once you rent out a property, new tenants will come in and populate the town.
Now, if you’re willing to be evil enough, you can kill the tenants and rent the property again to watch it be repopulated once more. The Fable reboot should definitely bring back this feature to satisfy those players who just dream of being landlords in a fantasy RPG setting.
4. Avo and Skorm
Avo and Skorm are deities tied to the whole morality system of the original Fable. The former represents goodness while the latter stands for evil. You can sacrifice people at the Temple of Skorm to gain more ‘evil points.’ Meanwhile, simply donating money at the Temple of Avo will whitewash your in-game morality alignment.
While the whole system is quite funny, having some deities tied to it makes for interesting lore. Funnily enough, the lore also states that both Avo and Skorm are made up. The temples to these fictional deities were simply made in spots where the Will was strong, in benevolent and malevolent energy, respectively.
However, the Fable reboot has a chance to set things straight. So, Avo and Skorm should be made real, like the Aedra and Daedra in the Elder Scrolls universe. There should also be cults associated with these deities who can then be featured in missions.
5. An Arena
One of the most exciting sections of the original Fable’s storyline is when you fight at the Witchwood Arena. There are back-to-back fights with some of the toughest creatures that Albion has to offer, and at the end of it all, you’ll feel exceptionally strong for having survived through it.
In the new Fable game, the Arena shouldn’t just be part of the main storyline. Instead, it should be made into a dynamic gameplay feature where you can come back and participate whenever you want.
6. Tattoo and Hairstyle Cards
Unlike the GTA games, where your player can get haircuts and apply tattoos, the Fable titles feature special acquirable cards for hairstyles and tattoos. This gameplay feature could be brought back in the new Fable as a nod to the original series. It would also add some amount of player customization that goes beyond the initial character creation screen.
The attractiveness and scariness modifier associated with these cards should also be brought back. This would allow the new Fable game to make NPC interactions more meaningful and dynamic.
7. In-depth Character Customization
There’s not a whole lot of customization in the Fable games. The first game has no character creation at all. The only modifications you can do to your appearance are through the tattoo and hairstyle cards, as mentioned before. Your character’s morality also decides how you look. Evil characters look corrupted and Sith-like, whereas good characters have blonde hair and a glowing aura around them.
As such, this is one of those gameplay features that the Fable reboot is in dire need of. It doesn’t need to have an advanced character creator, but a basic one that lets you choose what you look like.
