Discover everything you need to know about the Trial of Chaos guide in Path of Exile 2 and how to defeat all three bosses.
Path of Exile 2 has received an initial release on December 6, 2024. There is a total of 12 distinct Classes, each granting its own uniqueness in the game. Ascending in Path of Exile 2 is a major milestone that unlocks powerful new abilities. To achieve this, you must first complete one of the game’s two trials. Complete the Trial of Chaos to get two Ascendancy points to enhance your character passives. The Trial of Chaos includes three main bosses in the final room that are hard to take down. In this guide, we’ll discuss the basics of the Trail of Chaos and how to complete each challenge efficiently.
Trial of Chaos Overview in Path of Exile 2
Xyclucian, the Chimera is an optional boss which is in Act 3, specifically within the Chimeral Wetland. Zone. Make sure you explore this fully until you find it and defeat it. This will drop you an Ultimatum which gives you a quest to find and begin your first Tria of Chaos. This is a whole other trial, basically a different game mode with some overlapping concepts. This one doesn’t run off an Honour bar but it runs off of your own survivability.
Each chamber that you enter will be relatively random and you gain a negative affix every time you enter a new chamber as well. However, you do get some choice over which one you are hit with from a pool of three. After each chamber, you are also going to be offered a reward in exchange for walking away and leaving something you can take with you. After three chambers, you will reach a boss chamber after that and then after defeating a boss, you complete the base difficulty version of the activity.
How to unlock Trial of Chaos in POE 2?
Defeat Xyclucian during the Legacy of the Vaal quest and he will drop the Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum. Collect it to unlock the Trial of Choas in Path of Exile 2. You can find the Xyclucian in the Chimeral Wetlands. The exaction location of this boss is determined somewhat randomly but I found the Deadly Nest near the west end of the Wetlands. This boss is easier than the Balbala from Act 2. Just knock down the stone altars it perches on to get in some easy damage. Take the Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum to the Temple of Chaos to participate in a Trial of Chaos.
A Step-by-Step Guide of Trial of Chaos Guide POE 2
The exact location of the Temple of Chaos may vary but we should find it somewhere else within the Chimeral Wetlands. To begin the Trial of Chaos, you need to interact with the Offering Altar and slot in Inscribed Ultimatum then click open. The Trial will open and then we can enter to start. As a quick heads up if we die during our attempt at this trial, we can start it over by interacting with the Offering Altar by hitting the close option and then hitting open again.
Choose a Tribulation
You luckily do not have to worry about the Honour mechanic for this Trial. However, you do have to deal with a new challenge modifier each round with four rounds of the Trial in total. The modifiers range from fairly benign to extremely detrimental. Let’s go through several choices and which modifiers are the best and worst to pick.
Tribulation | Explanation |
---|---|
Stalking Shade | Stalking Shade is not a terrible choice at least if you’re only one or two rounds from completing the Trial. It is an intimidating one though. |
Chaotic Monster | Chaotic Monster is not terrible but it definitely adds lethality of monsters. Monsters gain 30% of damage added as extra chaos damage. |
Impending Doom | Rings of Doom appear on the ground which grow over time, exploding for physical damage once they reach a maximum area. This is an obstacle category of challenge modifiers and these are the worst ones. At least, one of the potential end bosses for this Trial is extremely difficult and has tons of AoE attacks to avoid already. Adding in an Obstacle modifier makes it nearly impossible to avoid getting hit a lot. We recommend you go with the Chaotic Monsters for the Trial of Chaos. |
Unstoppable Monsters | Monsters cannot be slowed or stunned and do nothing to prevent the effects of freeze. |
Heart Tethers | Bloody hearts appear that apply tethers slowing you. Breaking the tether will stun you. |
Lessened Reach | 50% less Area of Effect and projectile speed. This modifier is fairly benign and it’s actually pretty helpful for the Frost Sorceress build which benefits from slow-moving projectiles. |
Monster Speed | Monsters gain 25% increased skill speed. This does make things more challenging but it’s not too bad when compared to other potential choices. |
Reduced Recovery | 50% reduced Life, Mana, and Energy shield recovery rate. |
Enraged bosses | Bosses deal more damage and take less damage. |
Petrification Statues | The challenge area contains several statues that petrify you if you stand within their gaze for a duration. |
Chaotic Monsters II | Monsters gain 80% of damage added as extra Chaos damage. |
Volatile Fiends | Monsters release deadly Volatiles on death. Rare monsters leave larger ones. |
Drought | Monsters grant no Flask and Charm Charges on death. |
Stormcaller Runes | Runes will appear which will call deadly lightning storms if you remain in them. |
Blood Globules | Globules of blood manifest nearby, tracking you. When above you they will fall, dealing physical damage. |
Damaged Defenses | 50% less defenses. This one is detrimental and will cut Energy Shield in half. It’s still better than an obstacle modifier. |
Burning Turrets | The challenge area contains turrets that will periodically fire (Fire Projectiles) ahead. |
Time Paradox | Buffs expire three times faster and debuffs expire three times slower. |
Damaged Defenses II | No defenses. This is one of the most detrimental modifiers for classes that rely on Energy Shields or high armour. |
Deadly Monsters | Monsters always deal critical hits. |
Toxic Monsters | Monsters hits always inflict bleeding and poison. |
Entangling Monsters | Monsters inflict Grasping Vines on hit. |
All Challenges in Trial of Chaos POE 2
There are different challenges you’ll have to overcome in each room in the Trial of Chaos. Many of these challenges require you to survive a wave until the timer runs out. There’s a task from one of the challenges in which you need to take a stone idol to its destination while encountering hordes of mobs. Choose to receive all rewards after completing a room or continue to the next room and enhance the reward by choosing tribulation.
Collect All the Soul Cores Room Walkthrough
Collect all the Soul Cores is a bit confusing round in the Trial of Chaos. Here are all the steps t to complete the Collect all the Soul Cores.
- To complete it, you need to pull the switch to the left of the Stone Alters.
- Go back up the life that you initially rode down and cross the bridge.
- The first soul core is to the left and after grabbing it you need to hurry back to the Stone Altars to deposit it as holding a soul core slowly drains the shield and life.
- Now, return to the top of the lift and head partway back to the first soul core location. However, you must stop at the lever along the way and interact with it.
- This will cause a path to your right to rise up which you can cross over to reach the second soul core.
- After bringing that soul core back, you can pull the first lever, the one to the left of the stone altars.
- Move towards the northwest to find the final soul core.
Once all cores have been deposited into stone altars, the round will end and you can move to the next room.
Defeat the Boss After Three Rooms
You will encounter the first boss after completing three rooms in Trial of Chaos. There are three bosses in total and two are relatively manageable while the other is extremely difficult. Bahlak the Sky Seer is the more difficult boss. Compared to the Bahlak the other two bosses are a walk in the park. Xyclucian, the Chimera performs multi-elemental attacks and heavy AoE damage.
You need to focus on dodging its telegraphed attack, so we recommend you bring the gear with strong elemental resistance. Scourge of the Skies is the third boss and this is a massive, reanimated bird with blood and earth-based abilities. Try to avoid its AoE blood attacks by staying mobile. For Bahlak the Sky Seer, utilizes the terrain to block its line of sight while dealing damage in combat.
Boss | Attack |
---|---|
Xyclucian, the Chimera | Heavy AoE Damage |
Scourge of the Skies | Earth-Based Abilities |
Bahlak the Sky Seer | Ranged Attacks |

Rewards for completing Trial of Chaos in POE 2
Once you defeat all four rounds of the Trial of Chaos, including the final boss you can move on to the reward room. After looting the Trial rewards chest there, you can approach the altar of Ascendancy that is just beyond and interact with it. The rewards that we obtain are Vaal Orbs and Soul Cores.
Vaal Orbs are used to corrupt items, allowing the item to change its effects randomly to grant enchantments. It also allows for an item’s modifiers that add additional sockets to enhance the equipment level. However, the corrupted items can no longer be modified. Soul Cores are powerful socketable items with unique mods that you cannot obtain from regular runes. The mod that you use from a soul core is proportional to the item you deposit it in.
You also gain two Ascendancy Points for the completion of Trial of Chaos. You can use these points to boost your Ascendancy class but this is a one-time reward in the game.
