Dark and Darker is a free-to-play dungeon-crawling dark fantasy RPG. And as you’d expect from a fantasy RPG, it has a character creator with several options. Gameplay-wise, the most important decision you’ll make will be regarding which class you pick. The game has a classic D&D-inspired class system, which helps with knowing what to expect from each one. So let us take a look at all the classes in Dark and Darker to determine which is the one most suited for you.

Fighter

  • Difficulty Level: Beginner
  • Strengths:
    • Well-rounded and can 1v1 most enemies.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Heavily dependent on their gear
    • No spells.

The fighter is a great class to start playing Dark and Darker with, as it has forgiving mechanics and allows for easy exploration of the game’s features. With the weapon mastery perk, the fighter can equip any weapon in the game, and even dual-wield with the perk of the same name.  Where you may have a tough time is in blocking and parrying, as they use the directional combat system, which may take some getting used to.

Barbarian

  • Difficulty Level: Beginner
  • Strengths:
    • Extra health
    • Bonus Damage with Two-Handed Weapons
    • Resistant to Magic
  • Weaknesses:
    • Slow movement, attack, and interaction speed

The barbarian is a solid solo class that is a lot of fun to play. Your bonus health and magical resistance provide plenty of reaction time. To master the barbarian, you will need to understand buffing and debuffing skills. Additionally, hitting enemies can be difficult in the beginning as you learn to start timing your slow attacks.

Rogue

  • Difficulty Level: Advanced
  • Strengths:
    • High movement, attack, and interaction speed
    • Moves silently without alerting enemies
    • Can pick locks without lockpicks
  • Weaknesses:
    • Low health
    • Low damage bonus
    • Vulnerable to magic

The opposite of a barbarian, the rogue rewards subtle gameplay and surprise attacks against enemies. It is a difficult class to master, but it is very rewarding when played well, dishing out enormous damage before the fight even begins. Your abilities allow you to hide, sneak up on enemies, and deal extra damage when striking them from behind.

Ranger

  • Difficulty Level: Advanced
  • Strengths:
    • Traps
    • Long-Ranged Weapons
    • Can track enemy players
    • Quickly start campfires
  • Weaknesses:
    • Cannot equip most melee weapons
    • Low damage with melee weapons

Positioning is all-important for a ranger. The class can be oppressive when taking up a vantage point and quickly losing shots at the enemy. Caught up in a close-quarters engagement, there is very little for a ranger to do. However, the ranger can unlock perks and use their skills to counter this weakness. These include laying traps for approaching hostiles, shooting enemies’ legs to slow them down, and increasing movement speed while shooting arrows, allowing kiting. The Spear Proficiency perk also allows them to fight with spears to fend off approaching enemies.

Wizard

  • Difficulty Level: Intermediate
  • Strengths:
    • Casts a variety of powerful spells
    • Replenishes spells by meditating
    • Equips magic weapons
  • Weaknesses:
    •  Low health
    •  Low physical damage
    •  Slow interaction speed

The wizard is a force to be reckoned with when played well. Perks allow you to apply powerful buffs to specific types of magic, like fire and arcane. However, playing the wizard can be frustrating solo, even more so than the ranger, as you have very low defense, and spells have casting time. The class plays best with a frontliner soaking the damage and stopping enemy movement. This will allow you to burn them to cinders with ease.

Cleric

  • Difficulty Level: Intermediate
  • Strengths:
    •  Healing and protective spells
    •  Equips plate armor
    •  Bonus damage to Undead
    •  Wields bludgeoning weapons
  • Weaknesses:
    • Slow attack and interaction speed.
    • Low bonus damage

With the ability to heal and revive, the cleric is a boon to any multiplayer party and arguably the most important class in the game. Using a shield and mace, you can also hold your own in battle, and even deal significant damage to undead enemies, of which there are many. Be sure to pick up the Undead Slaying perk to focus down undead faster and the Spell Memory perk to cast additional spells.

Bard

  • Difficulty Level: Advanced
  • Strengths:
    • AoE abilities
    • Fights well with swords
  • Weaknesses:
    • Loud actions that may attract nearby enemies

Fighting with a rapier and a musical instrument in tow, the bard is a great class to pick while playing in a party. You can buff teammates, distract enemies, and deal significant damage yourself while singing your heart out with pizzazz. The difficulty of the class lies in timing button presses to make your abilities more effective. The bard’s music does make it nearly impossible to play with any semblance of stealth.

Warlock

  • Difficulty Level: Advanced
  • Strengths:
    •  Casts curses to debuff enemies
    •  Can wield a variety of physical weapons
  • Weaknesses:
    • Lose health when casting spells

A practitioner of the dark arts, the warlock is a damage dealer and significantly more adept in melee combat than the wizard. The loss of health while casting spells can be countered with the Torture Mastery and Vampirism perks, which heal you when certain damage conditions are met. In addition to using decent melee weapons, the warlock has access to the Phantomize ability which allows them to phase through attacks and reposition themselves.

Druid

  • Difficulty Level: Beginner
  • Strengths:
    • Shapeshifts into various animals
    • Healing spells
  • Weaknesses:
    • Able to use limited equipment

The druid is an extremely powerful class in Dark and Darker, perfect for solo playthroughs. Druids combine powerful shape-shifting with healing spells, snaring spells, and decent melee damage in human form. Similar to warlocks, the druids have the Dreamwalk perk, which allows them to escape sticky situations by briefly becoming invulnerable when taking damage in their human form.

Sorcerer

  • Difficulty Level: Advanced
  • Strengths:
    • Casts spells without using magical items
    • Has the ability to merge spells
  • Weaknesses:
    •  Long casting time and spell cooldowns

The newest class in the game, the Sorcerer, has access to a vast number of spells and spell combinations. The spell combination ability makes the sorcerer the most complex class in the game, with tons to experiment with and discover. Their weapon of choice is the crystal sword, but you’ll be dishing out the majority of damage with barehanded spellcasting and plenty of cheesy spell combinations to choose from. The class can have different builds according to spell setups and has plenty to discover once you are well-versed in the game’s magic mechanics.
