There are many monster variants that you will meet in Monster Hunter Wilds, and this article explains all the different types in details.

Monster Hunter Wilds has successfully capitalized on the nostalgia factor, and you will see some prominent forms return in this title. A new type has also been introduced in the game, which adds an interesting but grim tone to the overall story. These different types of monsters add diversity to your hunts, making them more challenging in many aspects.
In this article, we will explain all the types of monsters that exist in Monster Hunter Wilds. Each type has some unique property, and we will explore all such details here.
How Many Monster Types Are There in Monster Hunter Wilds?
There are four types of monsters that you will encounter in Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Normal Monsters
- Guardian Monsters
- Tempered Monsters
- Frenzied Monsters
Here is a detailed explanation of each monster type in Monster Hunter Wilds.
1) Normal Monsters

As the name suggests, normal monsters are ordinary creatures that you will encounter. They do not have any special property other than their innate abilities. You will find these monsters across all the regions of Monster Hunter Wilds.
Scoutflies have the usual neon-green color when you are tracking a normal monster. For these monsters, their wounds are also highlighted in red when you use the Focus Mode. These monsters do not have any additional drops outside their normal ones.
2) Guardian Monsters

Guardians are a new type introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. These are very closely related to the story and the plot of the game. They play a significant role. Simply put, these are artificial monsters that the Keepers had created. They are not organic creatures. According to the game’s lore, they do not have the means to eat or reproduce. (However, this is proved wrong by Arkveld entirely.)
All Guardian monsters are categorized as “Constructs” in Monster Hunter Wilds. These also have a distinct white shade, and they only appear around the Ruins of Wyveria region. During fights, they will often relocate and absorb Wylk (or Wyvern Milk) from certain spots to regain their power. This is equivalent to other monsters retreating and resting to refresh themselves.
There are five Guardian monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Guardian Doshaguma
- Guardian Rathalos
- Guardian Ebony Odogaron
- Guardian Fulgur Anjanath
- Guardian Arkveld
The monster Zoh Shia is not explicitly categorized as a Guardian, but it is still a construct however.
3) Tempered Monsters

A returning type from previous entries in the franchise, Tempered Monsters are stronger variants of normal monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds. Simply put, they are the veterans of the monster ecosystem, who have fought and survived battles. Normally, they will brandish large visible scars as a sign of their battles.
Tempered Monsters are more aggressive and have a wider health pool. When you track them with scoutflies, they become blue in color instead of the usual neon-green shade. These monsters also have Tempered Wounds, which are highlighted in blue when you use the Focus Mode. Hitting these spots with a Focus Strike does massive damage.
Tempered Monsters have two special drops in Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Parts for Artian Weapons.
- Hero Symbol 1,2, and 3 (based on difficulty).
Unfortunately, these drops are not available with any other monster type in Wilds. You can come across Tempered Monsters in any region of Monster Hunter Wilds.
Note: Guardian monsters can also appear in their Tempered forms.
4) Frenzied Monsters

Yet another returning monster type, Frenzied variants in Monster Hunter Wilds are afflicted with the Frenzy virus that originates from Gore Magala. These are extremely violent monster variants that will act aberrantly in most scenarios.
Frenzied monsters have access to the same moveset as their normal variants, but they can often be unpredictable and relentless. These monsters have special Frenzy Shard and Frenzy Crystal drops. These variants can also appear in any region of Monster Hunter Wilds.
