The side bosses in the open world are the other known ways to increase your Spirit. The first side boss is in Act 1 and this boss is called King of the Mists and is located in Freythorn. You can also obtain Spirit by defeating Ignagduk, the Bog Witch in The Azak Bog (Act 3) and it grants +30 Spirit.
You can fight this boss again in Act 6 on a more difficult level for an additional skull. Defeat Ignagduk, the Bog Witch in The Azak Bog (Act 6 — Cruel Difficulty) to gain +40 Spirit. Once you defeat all of these bosses, then a consumable that boosts your Spirit will drop onto the ground.

How to Defeat The King in the Mists
King in the Mists is one of the hardest bosses in Path of Exile 2. Freythorn is a pretty tough area even if you’re slightly higher level than it because there are very small walkaways and a lot of enemies that fill them up. These enemies have poison that attacks you and can stick you in a specific position. It becomes quite a frustrating experience unless you’re pilling through the huge DPS. You will move into this area and find three different ritual sites and activate them to kill a whole bunch of enemies.
After you’ve done that, you get to go fight King in the Mists which has its own arena. This fight is long and frustrating if you’re not a huge DPS build for two reasons. First, you need to have your Flasks last as long as possible and before the actual fight in the area. There’s a whole bunch of enemies that you need to clear out and then when you start the encounter a whole other bunch of enemies also appear. You need to kill them before the King of Mists spawns and he has a second health bar. Stretch out your Flasks at least until you fight the Boss. There’s a whole bunch of enemies on top of the boss fight area.
The first form of King in the Mists is a little bit more mobile and agile, allowing you to keep teleporting all over the place. Dodge the attacks as best as you can. He’ll start planting flags into the ground and destroy them as quick as possible. Throughout the area, there is going to be a lot of stuff on the floor like AoE puddles, Careful of where you’re running to, or else you’ll take high damage.
Phase 1: Human
The boss appears as a hooded figure holding a wooden staff. He swarms the arena with curses and afflictions, dealing direct damage and damage over time.
Attacks | Explanation |
---|---|
Thorngrip | A boss creates damaging vines in a small cone, dealing normal damage. |
Invasive Growth | He slams his staff on the ground to create a large AoE of damaging vines, dealing medium damage. |
Blood Pools | In the area, red pools of blood appear that deal damage while they stand on it for more time. |
Affliction Totems | He summons Affliction totems on the ground, sending an arena-wide pulse that inflicts curses on you and deals physical damage. |
Ritual of Dance | Place a curse on you, allowing you to be imprisoned in stasis for straight 3 seconds. |
Ritual of Meditation | Inflict curse on you if you’re somehow captured moving as the timer runs out and become imprisoned for 3 seconds. |
The boss’s attacks are easy to dodge as his moves are telegraphed. Pay attention to the Ritual of Dance which curses you if stop running and the Ritual of Meditation causes curse you if you move in the arena.
Second Phase: Wildwood Form
He will grow when his second phase begins and he will not be mobile anymore, meaning he will not teleport in the arena. With a couple of moves, you can clear the shield pretty much instantly. His attack rate and stuff goes up through the roof. He has two specific moves in which he powers up a big purple ball on top of him and slams that on you. As soon you see it leave his body and start to travel, dodge out of the way. If you dodge too soon then it will follow you, so just wait until you see it start to leave.
Attack | Explanation |
---|---|
Purple Pustules | He will cause glowing purple pustules to grow from the ground and if you’re near them it will explode, afflicting you with Shadow Surge. This is an effect that debuffs you to get more physical damage. |
Insect Swarm | Swings his arm in the forward direction to summon a wave of insects to deal damage if you’re caught inside. |
Insect Ball | Summons a swarm of dark insect-like creatures that explode on impact with the target |
The curses become more intense in phase 2, dealing additional damage. Again, you need to be hitting the flags that he plants and now there are two of them, so just keep an eye on them. He drops purple egg-like things on the floor that you must avoid them because they will explode when you get close to them.
