With the latest Android 16 feature, Google is making it basically pointless for thieves to steal your phone! The new Anti-Theft features come with many benefits, allowing you to be better protected against anybody who isn’t supposed to have your device. Let’s explore what’s new.

While Theft Protection and Identity Check features were released earlier in Android 15, they were exclusively available on Pixel smartphones. These features have now made their way to other smartphones thanks to the latest Android 16 update.

Android 16 Theft Protection & Identity Check Features Explained

As detailed earlier by Google, Android Theft Protection will be an AI-powered feature that can detect if a thief has run away with your phone, arguably the most common and effective way thieves steal personal belongings. As long as the Theft Protection feature is on, your phone will automatically lock itself.

Of course, this isn’t enough. To further improve security on Android 16, Identity Check will also enhance overall protection. In a situation where the thief knows your password, PIN code, or pattern, things can get quite dicey. Biometrics are commonly used to ensure the best security for your phone, so now with Identity Check enabled, changing security-sensitive settings will require a biometric check first.

This way, if somebody who isn’t supposed to be operating your phone attempts to access your saved passwords or change the security settings, it will simply be denied. Such changes can only be made if the user passes the biometric check. You may think this makes operating the phone a hassle, but guess what — Google designed the functionality in a pretty innovative manner. Identity Check only activates if the device is taken outside a “trusted area.”

In addition to this, Advanced Protection plus Live Threat Detection are coming to Android 16 smartphones. Once Advanced Protection activates, your Android device gains additional safeguards to ensure the strongest security. According to Google, it gives a boost to your device’s defense against web-based attacks and harmful applications.

Live Threat Detection automatically alerts you if there are any suspicious app behaviors. It warns the user and prompts them to uninstall the app. By the way, Android 16 also intelligently hides the content within SMS messages received on your phone; you can only view them once you unlock the device.

Android 16 is shaping up to be a major overhaul for this operating system used by millions of smartphones worldwide, and it appears that the newest iteration will feature highly appreciated security enhancements.
