Jujutsu Kaisen cursed technique is one of the most intriguing power systems out there. But, some are more complex than others.
One of the perks of being a Jujutsu Sorcerer is that you get to learn how to master cursed techniques. Especially if you’re from one of the big clans, your family will likely enlist you at Jujutsu High. However, learning sorcery in Jujutsu Kaisen is not anything like preparing for a math exam, though both are equally frustrating.
As a Jujutsu Sorcerer, you must get familiar with cursed energy, its origin, how it manifests into cursed spirits, and, most importantly, how to use it in a technique. This is where things get interesting. Cursed techniques can get pretty complicated, and some require a ton of cursed energy. However, even among these high-level techniques, some are either surprisingly simple or well-explained in the anime. Let’s start from there.
4 Cursed Techniques Everybody Understands
Throughout the story, there are some pretty well-known cursed techniques. These are unique and inherent techniques that are catchy enough to easily latch onto the fans’ memories. Even so, don’t underestimate them, because in the Jujutsu Kaisen world, if an enemy understands your cursed technique, then its strength is amplified.
1. Nobara’s Resonance
Nobara’s technique is one of the earliest to be introduced in the series. It involves hammering a doll and a lot of nails. This technique is called Resonance and can attack its target from a large distance. But how exactly? Resonance requires a part of the target to be in the range of Nobara’s strike. It’s not necessarily the target itself—a piece of their body, like hair, clothing, or even severed limbs, would suffice.
All Nobara has to do is imbue her hammer with cursed energy, put the piece on a doll, and then hammer a nail into both. Though it sounds simple, the strength of this technique can’t be underestimated. So much so that it heavily hampered Sukuna in his final fight.
2. Todo’s Boogie Woogie
Speaking of simple, there’s nothing easier than clapping your hands. Imagine if a sorcerer’s whole cursed technique only involves clapping hands. Would that be a weak technique in Jujutsu Kaisen? Simple, maybe. Weak? Absolutely not. Aoi Todo’s Boogie Woogie allows him to teleport anywhere. Not only that, but it’s also a versatile technique that allows him to switch two objects with cursed energy, be it people or tools. All he has to do is clap his hands and intend to do so.
This is where it gets tricky—not for the audience to understand Todo’s Boogie Woogie, but for anyone fighting him. His technique could get extremely frustrating to counter because not every clap leads to teleportation. Sometimes, Todo just clapped to feign his opponent and throw them out of their rhythm. It’s a simple yet effective cursed technique.
3. Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique
The Ten Shadows Technique is one of the most interesting in Jujutsu Kaisen. It allows the user to summon ten shikigami from their shadows, each with different quirks and abilities. In the series, Megumi Fushiguro piqued Sukuna’s interest precisely because of this innate technique.
However, there’s a catch to this powerful technique. If you want to summon a shikigami, you have to tame it first. The only exception to this requirement is the Demon Dogs, which are always available by the time the user develops their cursed technique for the first time. The strongest among these shikigami is Mahoraga, who possesses the ability to adapt to any attack and circumstances thrown at it.
4. Gojo’s Limitless
If an anime fan thinks about Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s almost always certain that the face appearing in a fan’s head is Gojo’s. His character is iconic and has become the poster guy for the series. However, it’s not just because of his fun and playful personality that he is so popular. He is also arguably one of the most overpowered anime characters in recent years.
Gojo’s Limitless or Infinity technique is an innate cursed technique exclusive to his clan. It allows him to stop any attack coming toward him until the attacker is completely stopped. You would need an ingenious or extremely out-of-the-box method to counter Gojo’s Limitless. For instance, Sukuna cut the very concept of space itself to hurt Gojo.
4 Cursed Techniques That Are Far Too Difficult To Explain
Compared to the previous cursed techniques, the next ones are a bit harder to elaborate on. Not just because of the lack of explanation in both the manga and anime, but sometimes the effects are just way more complex. However, let’s try to see the intricacy behind these techniques.
1. Reggie’s Contractual Re-creation
Reggie’s innate technique might be one of the fanciest ways to manipulate cursed energy in Jujutsu Kaisen. Not just because of its quirky characteristics, but also because of how the technique can impact his battle. This technique is called Contractual Re-creation.
How it works is it utilizes receipts as its main tool. It can create anything from a vehicle to topping up Reggie’s stamina. First, the user must have a receipt that implies a physical thing or an activity. After that, cursed energy is applied, and the receipt must be burned. It’s a strong technique if the user is creative enough. However, the requirement to burn the receipt makes water a natural counter to this technique.
2. Kinji Hakari’s Idle Death Gamble
Speaking of Jujutsu Kaisen cursed techniques that can raise an eyebrow, this one definitely does. Idle Death Gamble is Kinji’s domain expansion, where it takes him and the opponent to a Pachinko-themed domain. As soon as the domain completes itself, Kinji must aim to get a jackpot within the game. To achieve this, there are four Riichi scenarios he must go through. Interestingly, these scenarios are based on an in-series romance manga called Private Pure Love Train.
To achieve the jackpot, the user must obtain three of the same characters from the manga. Explaining the whole manga and the game mechanics in his domain would be time-consuming, wouldn’t it? That’s why Kinji’s domain also transfers all the rules to his opponent through the domain’s guaranteed hit effect. This is non-lethal. In exchange, the domain constructs itself within 0.2 seconds.
When the user gets the jackpot, Idle Death Gamble gives them an unrestricted amount of cursed energy and an automatic reverse cursed technique. It lasts for the duration of the game’s soundtrack, which is four minutes and eleven seconds. In terms of the fun factor among Jujutsu Kaisen cursed techniques, Idle Death Gamble is up there.
3. Kirara Hoshi’s Love Rendezvous
Kirara’s technique in Jujutsu Kaisen might seem complicated, especially if you know nothing about constellations. The key to deciphering her cursed technique lies in the knowledge of stars and the night sky. Her Love Rendezvous allows her to mark objects with signs of the stars Imai, Acrux, Mimosa, Ginan, and Gacrux. The marking mechanic is a bit similar to Nobara’s. However, while Nobara has to grab a physical piece of her opponent, Kirara’s Love Rendezvous only requires her to touch the target’s cursed energy.
After she marks the target with a certain star, the target must go through the other stars in a specific order. The determined order is based on the star’s distance from Earth. This is the order of the stars: 1. Imai, 2. Acrux, 3. Mimosa, 4. Ginan, and 5. Gacrux. For instance, if you’re marked with Imai and your friend is marked with Mimosa, then you have to go through an object or person marked with Acrux first. On top of that, objects marked with the same star will attract each other like magnets. Imagine if Kirara marks Megumi and all of his rabbits with the same star; that would be troublesome, wouldn’t it?
4. Sukuna’s Fuga
The first time Sukuna showcased this technique was in his one-sided fight against Jogo, the volcano-cursed spirit. The appearance of his Fuga is a flaming arrow, which differs so much from Sukuna’s slashing attacks. So much so that it threw Jogo off.
What’s more frustrating is that Sukuna didn’t explain a thing about it. In doing so, he rejected the chance to enhance the technique’s potency as a display of power. What followed was a showdown between Jogo’s fiery attack and Sukuna’s Fuga, with Jogo ending up burnt to ashes. Despite the way that Sukuna’s Fuga works weren’t explained in the anime, fans have speculated a theory or two.
Conclusion
Be it the power system or the characters, Jujutsu Kaisen has a touch of complexity behind them all. Thankfully, Gege Akutami decided to integrate expositions on how a cursed technique works as an option for the sorcerers to enhance their power.
Otherwise, it would be difficult to keep track of what’s happening. Jujutsu Kaisen has some of the most amazing action scenes in anime. However, visually pleasing battles come at the cost of a complex power system.
