4 Jujutsu Kaisen Moments That Shocked Everyone (and 4 That Everyone Expected)

Jujutsu Kaisen is full of shocking plot twists. But, there are also some moments that fans predicted before it happened.

Jujutsu Kaisen has been hailed as one of the best modern anime, not just for MAPPA’s quality animation but also for how the story unfolds. Story-wise, Jujutsu Kaisen has many plot twists that dropped fans’ jaws to the floor. However, there are also plot points that fans totally saw coming. Some plot points are just too predictable; they are practically visible from miles away.

After all, Jujutsu Kaisen is a shonen anime/manga. So, like any other media, there are always recurring tropes and themes, especially with shonen. Things like the power of friendships, determination, and fighting for a noble cause are pretty common tropes in shonen. Moreover, with how big the shonen demographic is in the industry, it’s easy to spot the similarities between these shonen anime, Jujutsu Kaisen included. That being said, let’s start with Jujutsu Kaisen moments that shocked everyone first.

4 Jujutsu Kaisen Moments That Shocked Everyone

One thing that Jujutsu Kaisen excels at is there’s no telling what would happen to your favorite characters. Gege Akutami actually has quite the reputation for being unpredictable when it comes to a character’s lifespan. Especially when he suddenly took out some of the fans’ favorite characters, seemingly without foreshadowing. Speaking of which, our first entry below is exactly that.

1. Nanami’s Death

Reserved, charismatic, and just a bit jaded, Kento Nanami is one of fans’ favorite characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. What made Nanami so memorable was not only his overall charming personality in the series but also how his background made him relatable to the fans. So, imagine their shock when Nanami’s fate was sealed.

After his confrontation with Dagon and Jogo, Nanami was left with a massive burn. At this point, he was exhausted and tried to get away from Mahito’s transmuted humans. But, just when Yuji spotted him in the distance, Mahito mercilessly ended his life.

2. Sukuna’s Rampage in Shibuya

One thing that Jujutsu Kaisen established since the beginning is how dangerous Sukuna was. Now, it’s common for a show to foreshadow a villain’s strength, but not in the way Sukuna did at the end of season two. Upon his awakening after Jogo fed Yuji with ten of his fingers, Sukuna challenged Jogo to a battle.

He said if Jogo managed to land a single hit, then Sukuna would be on board with whatever Jogo wanted. However, this battle led to the climax of the Shibuya incident, quite literally a calamity. If Sukuna’s battle for fun has this scale of destruction, then how would it be when his final battle gets an anime adaptation?

3. Nobara Coming Back to Life

Nobara’s death at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen season two is one of the pivotal points for the three main casts. Not only did her fate get thrown into a limbo between being alive and dying, but her death was also such a shock to the fans. But, the really unexpected thing is when she eventually came back to life.

That being said, her return wasn’t exactly the pleasant surprise you might think. Throughout Jujutsu Kaisen’s plotline after her death, she’s barely mentioned anymore. Her death felt like it was sealed and would never have a different outcome until it did. However, it didn’t land as a nice gift to the fans. Rather, her return received mixed responses, with a sentiment that Gege Akutami didn’t treat her character as best as he could.

4. Gojo’s Death

Satoru Gojo’s death was the moment that tore the fan base in half, quite literally. Not just because Sukuna cleaved him into a two-parter, but this decision proved to be notorious among the Jujutsu Kaisen community. Gojo was always the strongest Jujutsu sorcerer of the era in the story. It had been established ever since the series began. So, it’s inevitable that he eventually faced off against Sukuna.

However, his death came as a shock, considering he had been a long-time fans favorite, but Gege Akutami decided to end him anyway. In turn, the mangaka received some backlash over Gojo’s death. At that time, he even received some death threats over this. In any case, Gojo’s death left a mark that Jujutsu Kaisen fans will always remember.

4 Moments That Everyone Expected

All those mentioned moments might be the biggest shocks in Jujutsu Kaisen. On the other hand, there are other moments that are very predictable in the series. Here are the most predictable moments in Jujutsu Kaisen.

1. Junpei’s Death

Junpei entered the plot as an introduction to how ruthless Mahito could be. Although this particular point of the plot gives a lot of screen time to Junpei, the real narrative is Mahito’s first encounter with Yuji. If you had foreseen the tropes surrounding Mahito and Yuji, you would know Junpei’s end was coming anyway.

As stated at the end of season two, Yuji and Mahito are the opposite sides of the same coin. Mahito won’t stop killing people as an evil cursed spirit, while Yuji won’t stop saving people. Alas, Junpei was the first victim of their overarching conflict in Jujutsu Kaisen.

2. Geto Wasn’t the Geto That Everyone Knew

This one is a little on the nose for the audience if you think about it. Especially when the story takes a flashback to Geto’s younger days. In the present time, Geto had a wide scar across his head. However, it was obvious in the flashback that the scar didn’t exist.

It was clear that something else was either controlling him or his brain was somewhat altered. The big surprise here was that there was a major villain behind the current Geto and who that villain was. As it turned out, it was Kenjaku, a notorious Jujutsu sorcerer who had been a threat for hundreds of years.

3. Sukuna Refused Yuji’s Offer To Start Over

Jujutsu Kaisen’s ending has some spectacular moments, but it also has some of the most typical points in a shonen anime/manga. However, what happened to Sukuna was another common trope in the genre. At the end, Yuji offered him a chance to start over, to have a new beginning.

However, in a true villain’s fashion, Sukuna said no. As a villain, Sukuna isn’t the type that often have a redemption story for his evil. Rather, he is the type of villain who is more suitable to be put in the pure evil category. It’s nothing new in a world of fiction. Despite his predictable ending, it shows consistency and makes sense for his character.

4. Yuji Is the Main Protagonist Cliché in the Ending

Speaking of which, Yuji at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen also displayed a typical shonen protagonist characteristic. In hindsight, it makes sense that he would offer Sukuna an offer to essentially rehabilitate himself.

However, this is pretty much every shonen protagonist at the core. They see the good in everyone without exception and try to save anyone in the vicinity. Can’t blame the series, though. At the end of the day, Yuji is the main protagonist in the story. Although how Yuji perceived the world contributes to the overall generic feeling around him.

Conclusion

Despite the amount of plot twists and shocking moments in Jujutsu Kaisen, there are still some points where it’s too predictable for the fans. Any mangaka or story writer couldn’t simply escape the common tropes and structures in a story, especially in a big and popular demographic like shonen.
