5 Things You Need to Know Before Playing Starfield Shattered Space

Starfield Shattered Space is set to shake up a few things to surprise both veterans and newcomers at release on September 30.

The release of Starfield Shattered Space DLC is right around the corner, nearly a year after the base game’s release. The expansion has been drumming up a lot of hype, and it is set to fulfill players’ desire for a new space adventure. In the year past, a lot has changed with Starfield, so the DLC will likely be quite fresh. Shattered Space will release on September 30, 2024.

Here are five things you should know before playing Starfield Shattered Space:

1) The DLC Focuses on House Va’ruun

Remember House Var’uun from the base game? The one Andreja belonged to? Well, it plays a significant role in the DLC. Shattered Space will take you to the city of Dazra, the home city of House Var’uun on Va’ruun’kai.

The base game did little to expand on House Var’uun in the main story quests, so you may feel a little lost. However, playing Andreja’s Companion quest – Divided Loyalties – will help with this somewhat. The quest dives into Andreja’s past and gives you a brief introduction to House Var’uun.

2) A New “Handcrafted” Planet with 50 Locations

Va’ruun’kai was a mystery in Starfield, with the location of the planet being hidden. Now, with the DLC, a vortex to the planet has opened, and everyone is heading there.

“You haven’t seen the last of the Zealots, Spacers, or the Crimson Fleet… As you explore the planet be on the lookout for those taking advantage of the situation,” Bethesda said in a post on X.

The planet is no longer a mystery, and everyone is looking to cash in. It is packed with 50 new “handcrafted” locations to explore. This is in contrast to some of the procedurally generated parts of the base game that received criticism.

3) More Close-Quarter Fights

Combat, while one of the weaker aspects of RPGs, was a fairly a strong suit for Starfield. The gunplay was tight, and players could engage with enemies at a distance and clear rooms as necessary.

Shattered Space is now looking to revamp combat and make it more up close. The combat arenas will be more compact and the enemies more aggressive. You will frequently find yourself face to face with enemies, and you may have to resort to melee depending on the situation. So brace yourself for more intense, chaotic enemy encounters in the DLC.

4) Darker Undertones in the Story

Based on the trailers of Shattered Space, the DLC seems to be taking the story in a darker direction. The footage showed blood-splattered hallways and flickering lights, unlike any location in the base game. This tonal shift could catch unsuspecting players off-guard.

In the Starfield Shattered Space deep dive, Bethesda developers discussed the themes of the DLC. The base game explores humanity’s search and desire for knowledge. The DLC will ramp up the stakes and explore what happens when this search for knowledge “goes too far.”

5) Traversal Is Now Fast (and Furious)

One of the milder complaints that Starfield received upon release was that the travel times were too slow. While players did get to hop around and between planets on spaceships, the exploration felt laborious.

With the Shattered Space story confined entirely to Va’ruun’kai, traversal on foot is no longer an option. Fortunately, Bethesda brought in the Rev-8, which will prove immensely useful in the DLC. This space buggy will take you from location to location in no time. It also comes mounted with a weapon that will help you clear hurdles along the way.
