Killing Tyranids is a joy for every Space Marine 2 player. If you own a Steam Deck, you may want to play the latest iteration of Warhammer 40k on this handheld device. Fortunately, Steam Deck supports Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2. However, whether the game will run smoothly for you makes for a different discussion altogether.
Handheld devices are generally less powerful and focus more on the compatibility factor. As such, the Steam Deck will run Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2, but you should not expect a very stellar performance.
Is It Worth Playing Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 on Steam Deck?
You will not have a very smooth experience while playing Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 on Steam Deck. Although Steam Deck can run the game just fine, the performance is choppy.
Software Compatibility Factors
Steam Deck runs on SteamOS, which is essentially a Linux distro. Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 uses the Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). Although EAC was updated to work with Linux, it is still a complex and heavy code that needs to be executed by the less powerful Steam Deck. You will likely face extensive loading times, especially during the first boot.
Hardware Compatibility Factors
Steam Deck uses an AMD-made Aerith APU. Given the heavy resources that Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 requires, the APU is not powerful enough to supply all the juice that you will need for a smooth performance. In most cases, you are looking at around 25 FPS average on the Steam Deck, with the graphics preset at low. During cutscenes, the FPS will usually go higher to around 30 FPS.
That’s not all, you will also need to have your FSR turned to Performance to get the average 25 FPS. Even with all of that, you will experience frame drops and lags when there is a demanding scene, like explosions or when hordes of enemies are coming together.
Should You Play Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 on Steam Deck?
If you want a smooth gaming experience, then Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 on Steam Deck will not provide much satisfaction. You will face significant lags and loading times, with the game often dropping several frames.
On the other hand, if portability is your prime concern and you want to play this game on the go, then the Steam Deck might be the right choice. Your visual experience may be lacking, but you can enjoy the game whenever and wherever you want.
Focus Entertainment has already mentioned that it is working on official support for Steam Deck and will optimize it further. Future patches may thus improve Space Marine 2’s performance on Steam Deck.
