Towards the end of Solo Leveling‘s first season, Sung Jin-Woo embarked on a Job Change Quest, upon completing which he was said to receive a “Job title.” It became a major turning point for both Jin-Woo’s character and the anime in general, as this arc not only forced Jin-Woo to push past his limits in order to survive, but it also saw him gaining the power of the Shadow Monarch.
The biggest obstacle that Jin-Woo faced in the Job Change Quest arc was the Boss of the Dungeon – the Blood-Red Commander Igris. He was undeniably one of the strongest opponents Jin-Woo ever faced in Solo Leveling. In fact, Jin-Woo himself claimed that he only managed to win against Igris by pure luck.
Defeating Igris and completing the Job Change Quest changed Jin-Woo’s life forever. He not only obtained the unique power of Shadow Extraction, but he also gained an irreplaceable and fiercely loyal ally by turning Igris into one of the first shadow soldiers of his ever-expanding shadow army. By the end of the series, Igris became the third strongest soldier of Jin-Woo’s shadow army.
Who Is Igris in Solo Leveling?

To put it simply – Igris is the shadow of Blood-Red Commander Igris, aka the Boss of the Job Change Quest Dungeon. His initial appearance saw him as a tall knight covered in blood-red armor. After Sung Jin-Woo defeated Igris in their first battle and gained the power of Shadow Extraction, he extracted the shadow of his fallen opponent and turned him into one of the first shadow soldiers of his shadow army.
It was later revealed that long ago, Igris used to serve Ashborn – the First Shadow Monarch, during the latter’s war against the Rulers. In fact, he was a lieutenant of Ashborn’s original shadow army. When Ashborn decided to retire and started searching for a successor, he tasked Igris with testing his successor when the time was right. From thereon, Igris remained inside the Job Change Quest Dungeon, waiting to test the capabilities of Ashborn’s successor – who turned out to be Sung Jin-Woo.
One of Igris’ most endearing traits is his unwavering loyalty. Even after Jin-Woo defeated him, Igris considered him unfit to be Ashborn’s successor and refused to become a part of Jin-Woo’s shadow army – that is until Jin-Woo gave him a reason to be loyal to him. He was the first major shadow that Jin-Woo had managed to extract. However, Igris’ position as the strongest shadow soldier in Jin-Woo’s shadow army was eventually overtaken by Beru.
Igris’ Powers and Abilities in Solo Leveling

When he first battled Sung Jin-Woo as the Blood-Red Commander Igris, his strength was on par with some of the strongest A-Rank Hunters. He outclassed Jin-Woo in almost every single category, as the latter claimed that he won only by luck. We should also note that the version of Igris that Jin-Woo first fought was actually much weaker than the one that used to serve under Ashborn’s command.
Igris used to be the strongest soldier in Jin-Woo’s shadow army, at least until the arrival of Tusk and Beru. As the series progressed, he grew significantly stronger. When Jin-Woo was reborn as the Second Shadow Monarch, Igris obtained his true powers and became a Marshal Grade-ranked shadow. At that point in time, his strength was only rivaled by Beru and surpassed by Bellion.
By the end of the series, Igris became one of Jin-Woo’s strongest shadow soldiers. Apart from his immense strength, Igris is a master swordsman and has years of experience in dominating his opponents with blades. Although he primarily wields a sword, Igris is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat as well, as seen in his battle against Jin-Woo. He also has superior intelligence as compared to the rest of the shadow soldiers. Moreover, he is extremely agile and can constantly regenerate from his injuries.

One of Igris’ first feats in Solo Leveling saw him completely dominating Sung Jin-Woo in battle. In fact, he threw Jin-Woo around like a ragdoll and only lost due to a surprise attack. After becoming a shadow soldier under Jin-Woo’s command, Igris aided his master in almost all of his battles from that point onward. Due to his expert swordsmanship, he can cut through hordes of enemies with ridiculous ease.
Even after Beru, the shadow of the Ant King became a part of the shadow army, Igris retained his position as one of the strongest shadow soldiers. For the most part, only Beru matched him in terms of strength.
However, after Jin-Woo became the Second Shadow Monarch, Igris regained his true power and became strong enough to hold the Frost Monarch at bay until Jin-Woo’s arrival. He even gained the ability to communicate after becoming a Marshal Grade-ranked shadow.

From the beginning to the end of Solo Leveling, Igris is consistently portrayed as one of Sung Jin-Woo’s strongest shadow soldiers. If we rank all of Jin-Woo’s shadow soldiers on the basis of their strength and combat prowess, Igris is definitely in the top tier. To be precise, Igris is likely the third strongest shadow soldier in the shadow army by the end of the series.
While he may not be as powerful as Bellion, Igris is undeniably Jin-Woo’s most valuable and trustworthy ally. Ever since he became a shadow soldier, Igris has continued to be loyal to Jin-Woo and stayed by his side through thick and thin. Without a doubt, he’s an indispensable asset to Jin-Woo’s vast shadow army.
Conclusion
Although Igris may not be the strongest shadow soldier, he’s undoubtedly one of the most well-rounded fighters under Sung Jin-Woo’s command. His mastery of the blade, blinding speed, reflexes, and disciplined fighting style make him an absolute beast on the battlefield.
