Is Obanai Overrated in Demon Slayer? Analyzing the Serpent Hashira’s feats and comparing them with the feats of his peers.
The Demon Slayer series has introduced fans to a plethora of characters over the course of the series. The Hashira are some of the most entertaining ones in the lot owing to their combat prowess. Not only are they powerful, but they also have unique Breathing Techniques that make them stand out. Obanai Iguro is the Serpent Hashira who has gained plenty of traction during the Hashira Training Arc. Despite the lack of manga content, the anime adaptation was quite successful, all thanks to their anime-original scenes. Based on discussions seen on social media platforms, it seems that the fans’ perception is skewed, making him overrated in the manga series.
Is Obanai overrated in Demon Slayer? Yes, we believe that Obanai Iguro is overrated in the Demon Slayer manga. This statement doesn’t take away the fact that he is an elite combatant whose contribution to the Demon Slayer Corps cannot be overstated. However, fans have embellished certain parts of his feats in the manga, which tends to skew the fanbase’s perception of the character.
It is important to not only analyze his feats but also understand where the readers place him on the Hashira ranking list. Furthermore, it is essential to evaluate the performance of other Hashiras present during the final battle, which will ultimately give us an idea of his contribution toward Muzan’s death.
Fans’ Perception of Obanai in Demon Slayer
Is Obanai overrated in Demon Slayer? Yes, Obanai is overrated, and the fanbase ranks him far higher than he deserves to be. Based on discussions that take place on various social media platforms and forums, fans have ranked him third strongest on the list. However, this isn’t really the case because there are other Hashira contenders who could take Obanai’s place.
There are some fans who have expressly stated that Obanai could beat the likes of Sanemi Shinazugawa. This statement isn’t true at all since Sanemi is one of the strongest Hashira in Demon Slayer, second only to Gyomei Himejima. This is why we believe that the general audience has overestimated the Serpent Hashira.
One might even go to the extent of saying that Muichiro Tokito is on par with the Serpent Hashira. They are both incredible swordsmen. However, placing Obanai Iguro in the second or third spot doesn’t make sense because the likes of Sanemi and Giyu’s feats in the manga are better than what Obanai has achieved in the manga.
Obanai Iguro’s Feats in Demon Slayer
Obanai’s feats can be seen in the final stage of the Demon Slayer manga series. Obanai Iguro was pitted against the Demon King himself. The very fact that he stood his ground is an impressive feat in itself. Furthermore, he managed to do this without activating his Demon Slayer Mark. However, this was at a point when Tamayo’s drug was already circulating inside him. Additionally, Tanjiro Kamado also assisted Obanai during this fight.
That being said, his most impressive feat was when Muzan blinded him. At this point in the manga, Obanai had to rely on his snake companion Kubarumaru, and managed to slither away from Muzan’s attacks. He also managed to turn his Nichirin Blade bright red, which landed a critical hit on Muzan. Since he was able to go toe-to-toe with Muzan while being blind, fans assumed that he was among the strongest Hashira in the series.
A Major Instance That Revealed Obanai’s Weaknesses in Demon Slayer
There were a few clear instances in the Demon Slayer manga that revealed Obanai Iguro’s weaknesses. His performance in the Infinity Castle Arc showed that he isn’t as complete a fighter as fans make him out to be. Obanai Iguro is undoubtedly a powerful Hashira. However, he seemed to struggle against Nakime, the replacement Upper Moon 4 demon. She controlled the Infinity Castle. Her powers make her a slippery target, and Obanai’s attempt to pursue her highlights her ability to evade demon hunters.
The Serpent Hashira couldn’t really land decisive blows on Nakime, despite being an Upper Moon 4 demon. While this doesn’t make Obanai weak per se, it revealed chinks in the armor. However, some fans seemed to have overlooked these instances in the manga, resulting in a skewed perception of the character.
An Underrated Hashira Who Is Stronger Than Obanai Iguro
Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, is often neglected in the animanga series. He managed to take on Akaza and defeat him with Tanjiro’s help. This fight exhausted Muichiro considerably since he didn’t come out unscathed in this fight. The Water Hashira, much like Obanai Iguro, managed to unlock the Demon Slayer Mark, the Transparent World, and turned his Nichirin Blade bright red.
The reason why Giyu and Sanemi are stronger than Obanai is their performance against Muzan, despite fighting Akaza and Kokushibo respectively. Unlike Obanai, they had to take on some of the most powerful Upper Moon demons before fighting Muzan almost immediately. Their previous fights took a massive toll on their body, and they continued to trade blows with Muzan despite being injured gravely. This is why we believe that Giyu Tomioka and Sanemi Shinazugawa are stronger than Obanai Iguro. This in turn explains why Obanai is overrated in the Demon Slayer series.

Obanai Iguro is undoubtedly a strong Hashira with an impressive set of feats. However, the fanbase has embellished some of his achievements, which in turn alters their perception of the character. There is absolutely no doubt that his performance against Muzan was among the best compared to other Hashira. However, certain Hashiras present there were forced to take on powerful Upper Moon demons before they could enter the battlefield. This is why we believe that Obanai Iguro is overrated in the Demon Slayer manga series.
