Uryu Ishida is a popular character from the Bleach series. Fans love him for his combat abilities and his patience. Uryu Ishida planned a way to get revenge for all the wrongdoings inflicted on him. He was extremely close to Ichigo Kurosaki, the protagonist of the anime and manga series. Uryu lived in Karakura Town, and he was also a doctor at Karakura Hospital.
He spent a great deal of his time with the protagonist, but things went south rather quickly as the anime progressed. He proceeded to join Yhwach, but all of this was done in an attempt to exact revenge for what was done to his mother. From the start, Uryu Ishida was introduced as a character with a strong moral compass. He was a man of conviction and rarely wavered. However, seeing him betray his best friend caught people off guard.
However, it is important to note that Uryu betrayed Ichigo because his target was none other than Yhwach. Uryu wanted to gain this man’s trust because he wanted to kill him. Yhwach was incredibly strong, and it would take the most meticulous plan to defeat someone like him. Uryu joined the Sternritters because he realized the truth about his mother’s death. He believed that she died due to an illness. However, Uryu came to the realization that it was Yhwach who killed her with his Auswählen.
Uryu Ishida’s True Motivation in Bleach
This character’s mother died when he was quite young. He thought that his mother died due to an illness. But, that was not the case. As the story progressed, he realized that his mother didn’t die of natural causes. Uryu’s investigation revealed that Yhwach killed his mother. He used the Auswählen which took her life away. Essentially, the Auswählen is a technique that allows Yhwach to absorb the powers of any Quincy. The meaning of the word when translated to English, is “to select” or “holy selection”.
A beam of light appears that takes away the powers of a Quincy and transfers that to Yhwach. Most Quincies in Bleach who are on the receiving end of this technique end up dying. This was the very technique that killed Ichigo Kurosaki’s mother as well. Uryu decided to target Yhwach and find a way to kill him. This is why he betrayed Ichigo despite being a good friend. Following that, he joined the Sternritters with the intention of killing the man who took his mother’s life away.
Uryu Ishida’s Abilities in Bleach
Antithesis was his most powerful ability. In its essence, the ability allows him to switch two people or objects’ places. Among the two targets, Uryu can place himself as one of the targets as well. If his opponent has inflicted a lot of damage on him, he could switch places with his opponent. This would inflict the same injuries on his opponent while he heals from his injuries.
As mentioned earlier, he is also one of the few Quincies who withstood the Auswählen. He utilizes a Spirit Weapon, which happens to take the form of a bow. Heilig Bogen was the name of his Spirit Weapon. When using this weapon, Uryu can extract Reishi and release the energy through arrows. He also has a Quincy form, which is called Vollständig. This form greatly enhances the efficacy of Antithesis, while simultaneously improving his physical and spiritual manipulation abilities drastically.
Uryu Ishida’s Fate in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War
What happens to Uryu Ishida at the end of the Bleach series? Uryu Ishida is alive and well. In fact, he assists Ichigo Kurosaki in his fight against Yhwach. Upon his ascension to the Soul King Palace, he witnessed a Heilig Pfeil being shot in front of him. This was his attack, and therefore, it startled him. However, he was surprised by his father and Ichigo’s father. His father revealed that the arrow was unique because it was made from the silver that clots Quincy’s heart anytime the Auswählen is initiated by Yhwach.
Uryu enters Seireitei through Yhwach’s portal and aims at his target. It successfully hit Yhwach, and Uryu expected it to restrict his abilities momentarily. However, Yhwach recovered almost immediately. Uryu thought that his efforts were in vain. However, Ichigo managed to cut Yhwach momentarily. Yhwach died, and Uryu survived along with Ichigo and his friends.
Conclusion
Uryu Ishida is one of the most cunning Bleach characters. He is patient and methodical. He will not shy away from betraying his friends if it means that he could seek revenge for someone he loves. Uryu Ishida is by no means an antagonist. He is not a villain because his actions weren’t fueled by his lust for power. He only betrayed his friends to kill the man who took his mother’s life away. His assistance in Ichigo’s fight against Yhwach is further proof that he is not an antagonist in the anime and manga series.
