Chainsaw Man is one of the most beloved series from the newer generation, captivating fans through its dark world of devils and their hunters. As the story progresses, we follow Denji, a tragic protagonist who wields the powers of the Chainsaw Devil and is manipulated by Makima. However, following her defeat, Denji begins life anew in school, taking care of Nayuta.

Unfortunately, when we believe happiness is in sight for Denji, newer antagonists and the dangerous Yoru are introduced. In the beginning, Yoru worked together with Denji to get out of sticky situations. However, his recent actions made many viewers believe that Yoru is no different from the hated Makima. Let us take a closer look at why fans think so and whether this is true.

Yoru’s Latest Actions in Chainsaw Man

Ever since her introduction, the War Devil – Yoru, has been up-front about her desire to kill Chainsaw Man for having defeated her in the past. Filled with vengeance, she became a fiend occupying Asa Mitaka’s body, gradually gaining back her powers and preparing to turn Denji into one of her weapons.

However, when things were not going her way because of the several external forces, Yoru began taking another path. In the recent chapters of Chainsaw Man, she took advantage of Denji’s desperation for intimacy, making him attached to her.

As seen in the extremely uncomfortable scene in chapter 193 of the Chainsaw Man manga, Yoru kisses Denji, expressing how she likes him. This made him cry out of joy. She promised more physical contact if he killed the Death Devil, threatening to turn him into a weapon if he failed.

There were two main reasons for Yoru doing this action. The first was that Yoru could not turn any item she didn’t own into a weapon. She had failed in making the protagonist into a spinal cord sword earlier in the story. The second reason was related to Pochita’s unique power of permanently erasing devils he ate. Considering Denji was suffering from losing Nayuta and had no motivation to fight, Yoru took advantage of his lack of love and happiness. She provided him with a glimpse of hope to achieve her goal.

This thoroughly shocked fans, as Yoru had been toeing the line between good and evil due to Asa’s interference. Unfortunately, as her power returned, she gained more control over the body, going on a rampage and negatively influencing the innocent Denji.

Yoru and Makima’s Similarities

Yoru and Makima are similar in more ways than what fans originally thought. They are both part of the Four Horsemen Devils, considered among the strongest entities in the Chainsaw Man universe. Additionally, despite being sisters, neither one shares any positive feelings for each other.

Makima wants to kill the other Four Horsemen using Pochita’s powers, while Yoru also cares little about their blood ties. As the depictions of Control and War, both devils wield immense power, though Yoru had been weakened during her introduction.

Looking past these connections, Yoru and Makima’s approach toward controlling Denji is frighteningly similar. Makima earned the hatred of the entire fandom for the way she manipulated Denji, using his loneliness and need for connection. Similarly, while Yoru used a different approach originally, she came to recognize how the protagonist’s desires could be manipulated.

She forcefully assaulted him, though the protagonist didn’t realize this and only came to depend upon her more. Hence, while Makima utilizes a more subtle touch and Yoru is more straightforward, both attempt to control Denji in the same manner.

Makima’s Treatment of Denji

While Makima and Yoru used Denji’s physical desires to control him, Makima was much smarter and secretive in her methods. She deceived him by showing him love, care, and affection for the first time, even helping him make friends.

However, this was all an elaborate scheme to utterly break his heart and force him into canceling his contract with Pochita. When Denji feels true love for the first time with Reze, she coldly kills her and cuts his connection. Her atrocities only kept continuing, as she forced Denji to fight Aki as the Gun Fiend and killed Power in front of his eyes.

By constantly pouring trauma onto the protagonist, Makima became the only ray of sunshine in his eyes. As a result, Denji even agreed to become her dog if it meant she would continue displaying affection to him.

While we are certainly glad Denji came out on top from this twisted relationship, Makima’s shocking treatment towards him is engraved in the minds of most viewers.

Yoru’s Treatment of Denji

Yoru, on the other hand, is much more brash in her actions, showing little tact in what she desires. As the War Devil, she can be just as clumsy as Asa, even showing naivety in most instances. However, she soon came to realize the perfect way of controlling Denji.

Right when Denji was depressed after Nayuta’s death, Yoru took advantage of his condition to display affection in a manner that thoroughly disgusted fans. While she claimed she was influenced by Asa’s feelings towards him, this was most likely not the case.

As revealed recently, Yoru did this to establish her position as the only one who likes Denji. The protagonist, with no one he could consider a friend, would have no choice but to completely rely on her. Through this, she would force him to kill the Death Devil or come to “own” him and make him her weapon.

Therefore, despite fans hoping that Denji’s newfound maturity would let him realize Yoru is simply manipulating him, his mentality has hit rock bottom yet again. Resultantly, in spite of her more direct approach, Yoru has come very close to what Makima failed to achieve.

Is Yoru Just Like Makima?

From what has been revealed so far, Yoru doesn’t resemble Makima entirely. However, she mirrors a facet of her sister’s personality. Yoru expresses herself much more openly, unlike Makima, who remains cold. She throws tantrums, has childish fights with Asa, and doesn’t try to hide her desires.

At the same time, as we have seen, Yoru’s recent actions have heavily reminded fans of Makima. She has taken advantage of Denji, manipulated him, and forced him into relying on her. While she didn’t control his entire external environment like Makima, Yoru has taken advantage of every tragedy that befell Denji.

The Differences and Similarities Between the Two

Some aspects of Yoru are inspired by Makima’s character, but we cannot say she is a copy. This is because Yoru’s goals are different from the Control Devil’s. Makima believed she was working towards the greater good and wanted to eliminate every source of evil using Pochita’s powers. If she couldn’t achieve that, she was happy to let him eat her. This is because she was obsessed with the original Chainsaw Man and his reputation as the Hero of Hell.

Yoru has none of this convoluted sense of affection for Denji. Her actions are driven by her need to gain revenge against Pochita and restore the concept of war in humanity. This would help her regain her power and reputation. Like her other sister, Fami, Yoru also seems to detest her older sister, the Death Devil.

She has indicated wishing to kill the Death Devil and stopping the Prophecy of Nostradamus. This could happen either by forcing Denji’s hand or making a powerful Chainsaw Man weapon using him.

Hence, we cannot say Yoru is completely different from Makima since she has already shown several shades of her. Nevertheless, her goals and core personality differ from her sister’s, though it’s easy to forget due to her actions.
