Discover how Jujutsu Kaisen had always foreshadowed Sukuna’s sinister plans for Megumi and the hints sprinkled across the series.
Right from the very beginning, Jujutsu Kaisen has captivated fans with a layered plot and shocking twists. However, one of the biggest shocks in the manga came at the end of the Culling Game Arc, when Sukuna left Itadori’s body to take over Megumi’s. This devastated fans because, unlike the protagonist, Megumi couldn’t control Sukuna. This allowed the villain to commit travesties that sunk the deuteragonist’s soul into the abyss.
While some fans believe this drastic change came out of nowhere, Gege had intricately laid out the breadcrumbs for this to occur. Let us take a closer look at how Sukuna’s sinister plans for Megumi were always foreshadowed.
Early Signs of Sukuna’s Interest in Megumi
Sukuna is known for his vanity and disinterest in other sorcerers. However, Megumi served as the only exception in Jujutsu Kaisen, since the King of Curses seemed genuinely interested in him. The earliest sign of this was in the Fearsome Womb Arc, where Sukuna expressed curiosity about Megumi’s technique and kept pushing him to go all out.
This was clearly a ploy for him to bring out Maharoga, one that nearly worked till Itadori got back control of the body. Later during his battle with the Finger Bearer, Sukuna seemed ecstatic that Megumi finally created his incomplete Domain Expansion.
A recent moment of foreshadowing that fans may remember is from the Shibuya Arc, where Megumi is saved by Sukuna on the brink of death. He also expressed that he had something for the deuteragonist to do. While many fans believed this to be just so the King of Curses could fight Maharoga, Sukuna taking over Megumi’s body showed how Gege had always planned this scenario.
There are multiple visual cues in Jujutsu Kaisen as well that help us see this piece of masterful development. On the cover of chapter 58 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Sukuna’s hands are around the necks of both Itadori and Megumi, but his signature black nails are only on Megumi. This signified how he planned to shift bodies between the two. Megumi sitting over the bullies he’s beaten up is oddly reminiscent of Sukuna’s throne skulls too.
The most shocking observation that many fans have made comes from the illustration in the very first chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen. The frog shikigami sitting on Megumi has the same notable pattern on its forehead that Sukuna has. This pattern does not appear in the main story, signaling that Gege had this massive twist planned right from the start.
Why Did Sukuna Want the Ten Shadows Technique
Sukuna is an extremely smart individual and has displayed it on more than one occasion. His interest in Megumi was for one main reason: the sorcerer was the inheritor of the Ten Shadows Technique. Going past being imprisoned in Itadori’s body, Megumi was the ideal vessel that would help him in his battle against Gojo.
The King of Curses had refused Mahito’s offer several times to leave his form since he knew it was the only way he could trick everyone and transfer bodies. Gojo has also mentioned the long history between the Ten Shadows Technique and Limitless, where both Zenin and Gojo Clan heads killed each other.
Since we knew that Megumi would not turn his hand against his mentor, the only conclusion leads to what Sukuna did. Sukuna’s strength would let him access several more Shikigami such as Agito and Round Deer. However, the main reason Sukuna took over the Ten Shadows Technique was for Maharoga.
How Did Megumi Help Sukuna in His Battle Against Gojo
As mentioned above, the main way Megumi helped Sukuna in his battle against Gojo was with his Ten Shadows Technique. In particular, this was with the Merged Beast Agito and Maharoga. Merged Beast Agito was a version of Nue with the powers of the Great Serpent, Tiger Funeral, and Round Deer. It worked along with Sukuna and Maharoga to rapidly attack Gojo and regenerate its wielder using the Reverse Cursed Technique.
With the distractions provided by its tenacity and electrical attacks, Sukuna could slice off Gojo’s arm. However, Gojo could destroy it using his Cursed Technique: Blue.
The most impactful contribution of Sukuna taking over Megumi was Maharoga. The walking disaster was able to find the perfect counter to Gojo’s moves by adapting to his infinity. While Maharoga did die to Hollow Purple, Sukuna could use its analysis pattern to figure out how to breach infinity himself. This let him develop the world-cutting slash, a move that bisected the entire world and killed Gojo in the process.
Final Fates of Sukuna and Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen
Sukuna’s twisted relationship with Megumi left fans fearing for the fate of the character. Thankfully, among the many deaths in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, Megumi was not one of them. After several exhausting battles, Sukuna’s grip over Megumi was gradually weakening.
Following a heartfelt talk with Itadori, Megumi regained the strength to fight back against his oppressor. Nobara’s return and strikes on Sukuna’s soul paired with Itadori’s Black Flash attacks finally separated the King of Curses from his host. Despite Itadori’s offering to harbor Sukuna again and share his sin, Sukuna stayed prideful to the very end before dying.
Therefore, Megumi was reunited with his friends and could begin looking forward to a more fulfilling life. In an after-life sequence of Sukuna, the villain also expressed to Mahito that he would live in another way if ever reincarnated. He then walks away with a young Uraume, making a bittersweet conclusion of his own.
Conclusion
Jujutsu Kaisen’s final arc is subject to a lot of controversy regarding its events, but one element that Gege receives praise for is Sukuna and Megumi’s dynamic. Even though the series ended a long time ago, fans are still discovering clever pieces of foreshadowing that set up Sukuna’s sinister plans for Megumi.
