PSN or PlayStation Network is down for several hours on October 1, 2024. Affected services include online/multiplayer games, PlayStation Store purchase/browsing, online messaging and streaming on PlayStation consoles, and account management (sign in/log out). The PSN services are down across the globe, affecting both PS5 and PS4 systems. Furthermore, according to PlayStation’s own “PSN Service Status” page, the outage seems to have affected systems like PS Vita, mobile app, and web functionalities.

Essentially, anything that uses PlayStation’s online services to function, isn’t working as intended. This also includes the PSN account management and login that is introduced with some of the recently released PlayStation PC titles. Some of the services are still working, like browsing the PlayStation Store on the web. However, features like logging into Sony’s consoles, or purchasing games seem to be facing issues. Furthermore, online gameplay is also affected, with some titles outright refusing to launch in online mode.

Here’s everything you need to know about the PlayStation network outage on October 1, 2024.

According to PSN Service Status, the PlayStation Network services have been offline since 9:21 PM ET on September 30, 2024. However, reports from users only started to show up online a few hours later. The majority of the user complaints are regarding PSN login. At the time of writing this article, the PlayStation App for mobile is working as intended. Additionally, the PlayStation Store web is also working properly, and even processing purchases. However, on PS5 and PS4, the PSN server issues still persist. We tested out some games like Elden Ring, and Remnant 2, both of which refuse to launch in online mode.

PlayStation or Sony did not release any official statement on the outage. However, the outage can be attributed to a recent change made to “Game News” on PlayStation consoles, particularly PS5. Following the most recent system update for the PS5, Game News started to show up on the console’s dashboard, instead of being relegated to the dedicated “News” titles.

[Update – 4 AM ET, October 1, 2024] PlayStation Network (PSN) servers are back online. All online functions and services have been restored.

Possible Reasons for the PlayStation Network Outage

In a recent X post made by @AskPlayStation, the “Game News” showing up on the dashboard was confirmed to be a bug. In the same post, PlayStation also confirmed that the bug “has since been resolved.” However, following the post, the PSN servers went offline for PS5 and PS4. While the cause for the server outage is unknown, it can be speculated that the server-side changes might have been one of the reasons. Furthermore, the most recent system update also added support for the new “Welcome Hub” on PS5. However, instead of being available to all users at the same time, the Welcome Hub follows a staggered release.

The staggered release of the Welcome Hub is maintained as a server-side change. The Welcome Hub is already available for users on the eastern coast. It’s possible that PlayStation is preparing to roll out the feature for the rest of the world at the same time. And hence, the “longer than usual” server downtime.
