5 Best Card Pulls for Competitive Play from The Pokemon TCG Stellar Crown Expansion

Competitive play in Pokemon TCG requires a significant amount of strategization. With that in mind, “Pokemon cards” are not the only ones that you should look at. Tool Cards and Trainer Cards are often the unsung heroes in clutch plays.

That said, here are five Pokemon TCG Stellar Crown card pulls that are top-tier in competitive play:

1) Sparkling Crystal

Here are the details of Sparkling Crystal:

  • Card Type: Trainer – Pokemon Tool – ACE SPEC
  • Description: When the Tera Pokemon this card is attached to uses an attack, that attack costs 1 Energy less. (The Energy can be of any type.)
  • General Rule: You may have any number of Pokemon Tools to your Pokemon during your turn. You may attach only 1 Pokemon tool to each Pokemon, and it stays attached.
  • Card Rule: You can’t have more than 1 ACE SPEC card in your deck.
  • Set: Stellar Crown 142/142

Sparkling Crystal is arguably the best ACE SPEC card in the Pokemon TCG Stellar Crown expansion. It is also probably one of the strongest cards in Tera-type decks. Stellar Tera types have three different energy costs, which can be quite troublesome. When you attach Sparkling Crystal to a Tera Pokemon, it will reduce the cost of its attacks by one of any energy type. Effectively, you will be able to set up an attack in two turns instead of three, which can be quite a massive boost in many situations.

Moreover, Sparkling Crystal provides an active effect, which means your opponent won’t really have any counters to it. Pair it with some of the other tool cards in the Stellar Crown expansion like Glass Trumpet and you can get a fast attacking playstyle that will catch your opponent off-guard.

2) Noctowl

Noctowl has the following features:

  • Card Type: Stage 1 Normal
  • Evolves From: Hoothoot
  • Type: Colorless
  • HP: 100
  • Ability: Jewel Seeker – Once during your turn, when you play this Pokemon from your hand to evolve 1 of your Pokemon, if you have any Tera Pokemon in play, you may search your deck for up to 2 Trainer cards, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.
  • Attack 1: 2x Colorless Energy – Speed Wing (60)
  • Weakness: Electric x2
  • Resistance: Fighting -30
  • Retreat Cost: 1 Colorless Energy
  • Set: Stellar Crown 141/142

Noctowl’s Jewel Seeker ability is what will make Terapagos decks insanely powerful with the Stellar Crown expansion for Pokemon TCG. It lets you search out two trainer cards from your deck if you have a Tera Pokemon in your hand. Considering that you will more likely use it in Terapagos decks, this requirement is as good as a freebie.

Even more impressive is the fact that Noctowl will find a place in many other common decks like Regidrago VSTAR and even Charizard ex decks. Just find out the trainer cards that you need, and it will set your hand pretty strong, leaving your opponent with very less to counter you with. However, you will need to evolve it from Hoothoot to use its unrestricted ability.

3) Briar

Briar’s card details in the Stellar Crown expansion are:

  • Card Type: Trainer – Supporter
  • Description: You can use this card only if your opponent has exactly 2 Prize cards remaining. During this turn, if your opponent’s Active Pokemon is Knocked Out by damage from an attack used by your Tera Pokemon, take 1 more Prize card.
  • General Rule: You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn.
  • Set: Stellar Crown 163/142

Briar is a difficult Trainer card to use, but it has the potential to heavily alter the current meta. When your opponent has two prize cards remaining, you can use Briar to shift the game’s flow altogether. If you Knock Out your opponent’s active Pokemon with an attack from any Tera Pokemon, you will be able to take an extra Prize card.

Being able to boost the number of Prize cards is a powerful strategy, as is prevalent from cards like Iron Hands ex. Since Briar will mostly be used in Tera decks, her condition can be met easily in most matches.

4) Galvantula ex

Here are Galvantula ex’s features:

  • Card Type: Stage 1 ex
  • Evolves From: Joltik
  • Type: Electric
  • HP: 260
  • Tera: As long as this Pokemon is on your Bench, prevent all damage done to this Pokemon by attacks (both yours and your opponent’s).
  • Attack 1: 1x Electric Energy, 1x Colorless Energy – Charged Web (110+): If your opponent’s Active Pokemon is a Pokemon ex or a Pokemon V, the attack does 110 more damage.
  • Attack 2: 1x Grass Energy, 1x Electric Energy, 1x Fighting Energy – Fulgurite (180): Discard all Energy from this Pokemon. During your opponent’s next turn, they can’t play any Item cards from their hand.
  • Pokemon ex rule: When your Pokemon ex is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
  • Weakness: Fighting x2
  • Resistance: None
  • Retreat Cost: 1 Colorless Energy
  • Set: Stellar Crown 051/142, Double Rare

Galvantula ex is the best anti-ex and anti-V competitive pick from the Pokemon TCG Stellar Crown expansion. This card is pure evil (or fun), since it will let you lock your opponent out of playing Item Cards. Activating this item lock via Fulgurite does mean you need to discard all energy from Galvantula; however, there is a sneaky workaround for that as well.

You can use cards like Sparkling Crystal and Glass Trumpet, both from the Stellar Crown expansion, to get the energy back and essentially keep using Fulgurite to really annoy your opponent. Furthermore, its pre-evolution, Joltik, can help you set up the board much faster for Galvantula.

5) Terapagos ex

Terapagos ex has the following features:

  • Card Type: Basic ex
  • Type: Colorless
  • HP: 230
  • Tera: As long as this Pokemon is on your Bench, prevent all damage done to this Pokemon by attacks (both yours and your opponent’s).
  • Attack 1: 2x Colorless Energy – Unified Beatdown (30x): If you go second, you can’t use this attack during your first turn. This attack does 30 damage for each of your Benched Pokemon.
  • Attack 2: 1x Grass Energy, 1x Water Energy, 1x Electric Energy – Crown Opal (180): During your opponent’s next turn, prevent all damage done to this Pokemon by attacks from Basic non-colorless Pokemon.
  • Pokemon ex rule: When your Pokemon ex is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
  • Weakness: Fighting x2
  • Resistance: None
  • Retreat Cost: 2 Colorless Energy
  • Set: Stellar Crown 128/142, Double Rare

The Pokemon TCG Stellar Crown expansion was made with one goal in mind – to ensure Terapagos becomes an absolute beast in competitive play. Terapagos ex is extremely versatile and can work well with old cards as well, though the Stellar Crown expansion is where it truly shines. Terapagos ex deals 30 damage per Benched Pokemon for just two Colorless Energy. If you pair this with Area Zero Underdepths, you have a whopping 240 damage!

Next up, Terapagos’ Crown Opal does 180 damage for three different energies, but that’s not the star of this show. Crown Opal prevents Terapagos from being damaged by basic Non-Colorless Basic Pokemon. With this, Terapagos can also tank attacks from prominent meta decks like Raging Bolt ex. Palia VSTAR is likely going to be the best pair with Terapagos ex, since the Water synergy will create a powerful archetype, especially with Area Zero Underdepths in your board.

Honorable mention: Area Zero Underdepths

Here is what Area Zero Underdepth’s card says:

  • Card Type: Trainer – Stadium
  • Description: Each player who has any Tera Pokemon in play can have up to 8 Pokemon on their Bench. If a player no longer has any Tera Pokemon in play, that player discards Pokemon from their Bench until they have 5. When this card leaves play, both players discard Pokemon from their Bench until they have 5, and the player who played this card discards first.
  • General Rule: You may play only 1 Stadium card during your turn. Put it next to the Active Spot, and discard it if another Stadium comes into play. A Stadium with the same name can’t be played.
  • Set: Stellar Crown 131/142

Area Zero Underdepths did not make its way to the main list for one reason mainly – it seems to be too synergized for Terapagos decks. This card increases the number of Benched Pokemon to eight if a Tera Pokemon is in play. Since Terapagos is a Tera Pokemon, and its Unified Beatdown does damage based on number of Benched Pokemon, the equation becomes pretty clear. Three extra Benched Pokemon with 90 more damage is mostly enough to OHKO most basic critters out there.

This card from the Stellar Crown Pokemon TCG expansion can also aid other decks in competitive play. Decks like Raging Bolt ex or Regidrago VSTAR (or any other utility Pokemon focused deck, really) can also benefit from the extra number of Benched Pokemon.
