Boruto manga has introduced a lot of new powers and concepts to the Naruto universe. However, we are bound to come across concepts and motifs from the original manga series since it is a sequel. One of the most popular motifs in both these series is dojutsu. They are special eyes that shinobis have received for generations, depending on the clan they hail from.

One such dojutsu is the Sharingan. The Uchiha Clan is reduced to just Sasuke and Sarada in the manga, all thanks to Itachi’s little stunt in the Naruto series. That being said, the Uchiha Clan has a stronger version of their Sharingan. This enhanced form is known as the Mangekyou Sharingan. Only a handful of people have managed to unlock this eye, and that includes Sarada Uchiha.

Most of you might be pretty upset with the way Sarada unlocked the Mangekyou Sharingan. However, Sarada unlocked the Mangekyou Sharingan exactly the way she was supposed to. There’s a clear intention behind this, and it could be connected to the writers’ intention to explore a unique theme in the story.

How Did Sarada Awaken Her Mangekyou Sharingan in Boruto

Sarada awakened her Mangekyou Sharingan a few chapters before the Two Blue Vortex manga commenced. The entire village pursued Boruto furiously, all thanks to Eida’s Omnipotence. However, the Shinjutsu didn’t affect Sarada and Sumire. The writers have done a terrible job with Sarada’s character writing.

She begged her father to help Boruto, reducing her to a damsel in distress for the millionth time. At that moment, she experienced strong emotions and the urge to help her dear friend. As she looked up at her father, she unlocked the Mangekyou Sharingan, and since then, hasn’t used it in battle once. This is how Sarada unlocked the Mangekyou Sharingan in the manga.

The Controversy of Sarada’s Mankegyou Sharingan in Boruto

The biggest controversy surrounding Sarada’s Mangekyou Sharingan is the manner in which she achieved it. What newer fans don’t understand is that other Uchiha Clan members had to experience some of the most traumatizing moments to unlock this eye. Only a handful of the bunch who have experienced losing almost everything in their lives achieved the Mangekyou Sharingan.

When Sarada achieved it because of her willingness to help Boruto, it trivialized the Mangekyou Sharingan. There is a reason why the Mangekyou Sharingan is rare, and those who wield it are some of the most powerful shinobis in the world. Let’s take a look at some of the previous wielders of the Mangekyou Sharingan.

Itachi unlocked his Mangekyou Sharingan after he saw his closest friend take his own life. Obito achieved the Mangekyou Sharingan after seeing his best friend kill the girl he loved. Last but not least, Sasuke achieved his Mangekyou Sharingan when he saw his brother die right before his eyes. Sarada achieved it when she wanted to help Boruto. One of these is not like the other, and this is why her Mangekyou Sharingan is controversial.

Did Sarada Deserve Her Mangekyou Sharingan

In short, nope. Sarada did not deserve the Mangekyou Sharingan in the manga. The thing about power is that it comes with a price. She is a strong shinobi with the markings of a prodigy. Therefore, this statement is not a commentary on her abilities as a shinobi. However, receiving powers without paying the price for it impedes the viewing experience. It seems as though any Uchiha Clan member can achieve it. She didn’t experience loss like most Mangekyou Sharingan users did.

Sarada Uchiha doesn’t require the Mangekyou Sharingan to be portrayed as a strong character. However, this situation trivializes the eye and it no longer makes it appealing for fans. As a reader, you’d experience an immense thrill when you saw a character with the Mangekyou Sharingan. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case with Sarada unlocking the Mangekyou Sharingan.

Why Sarada’s Mankegyou Sharingan Awakening Was Exactly as It Was Supposed To Be

You might be wondering why we believe that Sarada’s awakening of the eye was exactly the way it’s supposed to be. There is a clear intention in her awakening, even if fans don’t particularly like it. As highlighted earlier, all the characters who unlocked it were swimming in this toxic sludge of pure hatred. However, Sarada isn’t one of those characters. Perhaps the writers wish to break the cycle of hatred, ushering in a new era for the Uchiha Clan members.

She is destined for great things because she has been portrayed as an Uchiha prodigy. The writers wish to create a break from the cycle of hatred, which is why Sarada probably awakened her Mangekyou Sharingan. If nothing else, this does set her apart from her father and uncle and brings her a bit closer to Boruto and Kawaki’s level.

Conclusion

There was a certain intention behind Sarada’s Mangekyou Sharingan awakening. However, that doesn’t mean it’ll resonate with fans, and the writers found out the hard way. Social media platforms were blowing up when she awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan. Writers deserve the plaudits for exploring themes that could resonate with fans.

While that takes bravery, the execution was rather poor. Perhaps the writers could have explored themes like “breaking the cycle of hatred” with motifs that aren’t as important and popular as the Sharingan. The Sharingan is undeniably one of the most iconic elements in the Naruto series. The fanbase is very well informed on this topic. Therefore, the fanbase will be quite sensitive to any kind of inconsistencies. The anime and manga community isn’t particularly forgiving when it comes to such motifs.

Therefore, exploring certain themes through motifs like the Sharingan isn’t the best idea. Additionally, the fans’ reception is clear proof that it didn’t work. That being said, fans are excited to see the Mangekyou Sharingan in action as the series progresses, as well as what Sarada Uchiha chooses to do with it post-time skip in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.
