What is the Schutzstaffel in Bleach? Take a closer look at Yhwach’s personal guards in the anime and manga series.
The Bleach anime series is inching closer to the conclusion now that the first three parts of Thousand Year Blood-War have been released. The upcoming part will most likely conclude the overarching story. Fans have been drawn to this installation of the series for various reasons. However, there is one reason that stands above all, and that is the screen time allotted for the villains in the series. When we talk about Bleach villains, there is one group that comes to mind – the Schutzstaffel.
Those who are not up to date with the anime adaptation might not know much about this group. The Schutzstaffel is a group comprising of some of the strongest Sternritters in the series. The Sternritter is a group of extremely powerful Quincy who were a part of the former Wandenreich army. The group had one goal, and it was to purge the Shinigami. The Schutzstaffel are some of the strongest Quincy within this group.
It is interesting to note that the Schutzstaffel is inspired by the paramilitary group that was a part of the Nazi Party. Fans can notice that Tite Kubo used plenty of German motifs in the anime and manga series.
About the Schutzstaffel in Bleach
There was a time when Lichtreich was reigning and there were four people who served Yhwach. This was from a time when the ranks of the Sternritter weren’t formed yet. However, the initial four didn’t survive. Over a thousand years later, Yhwach had a close set of exceptionally powerful Quincy. These were the strongest in the Sternritter, and they became his personal guards. Sternritter was the name given to this group. There were three members initially, and it is currently at 5. Yhwach announced that Uryu Ishida would become his successor, and he too became a part of the Sternritter.
This group is led by Lille Barro, who has the Schrift “X.” Fans can see that the members of the Schutzstaffel take a great deal of pride in their role. In fact, they have the honor of standing behind Yhwach when he is addressing members of the Sternritter. While this is one of the most elite combat groups of the organization, Yhwach considers them expendable. This becomes quite apparent in the manga series when he uses the Auschwahlen for the third time in the anime series. Let’s take a closer look at all the members of the Schutzstaffel and their abilities in brief.
All Members of the Schutzstaffel in the Bleach Series
As mentioned earlier, there are five members in total. Uryu Ishida is one of the most well-known members of the Schutzstaffel. He betrayed Ichigo and joined Yhwach, which was a part of his grand plan to defeat the latter for killing his mother. Uryu Ishida has the Schrift “A” since he is Ywach’s successor.
Antithesis is the name of his ability in the Bleach series. It allows him to swap two objects or people. As in, Uryu Ishida can quite literally switch his place with his opponent after sustaining a lot of injuries. This way, all of the sustained injuries transfer to his opponent since they switched places. The second member is Pernida Parnkgjas, and he has the Schrift “C” for Compulsary. Pernida has the ability to shoot his nerves into his opponent and completely take control over their movements. He can also shred one’s body instantly.
The third member of the Schutzstaffel is Askin Nakk Le Vaar. Askin can ingest a substance and calculate the right amount of dosage for it to be lethal. Following this, he can inject it into his opponents, either killing them or incapacitating them instantly. This ability is called Deathdealing and the subsequent Schrift if “D”.
Gerard Valkyrie is the fourth member of the Schutzstaffel. The Schrift assigned to him is “M” for Miracle. This ability allows him to succeed in most situations by quite literally manifesting a miracle. Last but not least, we have Lillie Barro. As mentioned earlier, he has the Schrift “X,” and he is the leader of the group. The ability is called X-Axis, and the user can put a perfectly round hole into any target, and there is nothing that can stop it.
What is a Schrift in Bleach?
One might have come across various alphabets for each and every member of the Schutzstaffel. The Schrift is German for “script,” and it’s a letter that Yhwach engraves in the soul of a Quincy. As a result, it awakens additional powers within the Quincy, which aids them in battle. Each Schrift offers a unique ability, and they are quite powerful, often tilting the scales of balance during a fight. Some of them are outrageous because they give them the ability to quite literally view alternate realities and every possible future outcome.
“A” for Almighty is one of the most powerful Schrifts that Yhwach has in his arsenal. Furthermore, the Quincies who have Schrifts can enhance their abilities drastically with the help of Quincy: Vollstandig. This can be viewed as a transformation that essentially boosts specific powers and allows the Quincy to bring out their full potential during a battle.
Lille Barro’s Role in Bleach
As mentioned earlier, Lille Barro was the leader of the Schutzstaffel in the Bleach series. He is a major antagonist in the Bleach series and is exceptionally powerful. He has the Schrift “X,” which is one of the most powerful abilities in the manga series. However, he didn’t survive towards the end of the manga.
Most antagonists are defeated in Shonen titles, and Bleach is no different. Shunsui killed Lille Barro with his Bankai. The Bankai slit Lille Barro’s throat, delivering the final blow. Fans love Lille Barro for his personality. Tite Kubo presented this character in a very realistic manner. This is why the fanbase finds the character entertaining to watch on screen.

The Schutzstaffel consists of some of the strongest characters in Bleach. Each and every one of them was an incredible fighter. However, most of them didn’t survive, all thanks to Yhwhach’s Auschwahlen. Uryu Ishida was the only one who survived since he was immune to it.
