Utahime’s cursed technique in Jujutsu Kaisen might not be the strongest. But, it earns her a place among the top Jujutsu sorcerers.

Jujutsu Kaisen features characters with unique and sometimes unthinkable powers, even by shonen anime standards. Gege Akutami definitely brewed some high-level imagination when he thought about the power system in his series. From a guy who claps to teleport to someone who literally manipulates the concept of space as his power, Jujutsu Kaisen has every quirky power imaginable.

Those great Jujutsu sorcerers got the much-needed screen time to showcase their powers. But what about the sorcerers with less prominent cursed techniques? Can Jujutsu Kaisen fans simply brush them off as mere side characters? The thing is, cursed techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen can be deceivingly weak, especially when the technique isn’t meant for direct combat. This is the case with Iori Utahime.

Who Is Iori Utahime

First of all, who is Iori Utahime? Utahime is the student supervisor for Kyoto Jujutsu High. Just like Gojo Satoru is responsible for Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara, Utahime has her students in Kyoto under her supervision. The two also know each other and have a really amusing senpai-kohai relationship. However, compared to Gojo, she isn’t well-known for her immense Jujutsu power.

Underestimating Utahime in combat would be a grave mistake, especially if another Jujutsu sorcerer works alongside her. Though she might not seem as dangerous as other sorcerers in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, she’s still a semi-grade 1 Jujutsu sorcerer. This means she could outmatch most cursed spirits and other sorcerers. But what is her cursed technique exactly?

What Is Utahime’s Cursed Technique

Iori Utahime’s cursed technique is called Solo Forbidden Area. This cursed technique amplifies the cursed energy of other Jujutsu sorcerers that she targets, including herself. However, unlike domain expansion or other techniques that mostly rely on the user’s cursed energy, Utahime’s cursed technique translates every aspect of her gestures into the output of Solo Forbidden Area.

When Jujutsu Kaisen says her technique uses every aspect, it means every single aspect: from the slightest change of gesture, every uttered word, even down to the music accompanying her moves. In a way, Solo Forbidden Area is more akin to a ritual than the typical combat-oriented cursed technique.

Utahime’s cursed technique requires synergy between her and other sorcerers, making it a technique that emphasizes teamwork. In short, if she’s alone, her combative prowess might not be comparable to most enemies. However, her potential increases if she’s assisting someone else in dealing with the enemy. When used properly, Utahime’s cursed technique can be a dangerous asset in Jujutsu society. However, it’s not like Solo Forbidden Area doesn’t have weaknesses.

Utahime’s cursed technique shines the most when the situation meets all the prerequisites for ideal output. If nothing interrupts her and she’s free to perform her technique, her enemy would likely have to retreat. However, if anyone manages to sneak up on her and force her into close-quarters combat, she would have no choice but to defend herself first.

In chapter 223 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Utahime performed her technique to support Gojo when he was facing Sukuna. By using all aspects such as dances, incantations, and music, Utahime boosted Gojo’s Hollow Technique: Purple to 200% output.

This is where her technique can be deadly. Rather than using a direct approach in battle, Utahime’s cursed technique is a priceless addition to other sorcerers. However, her major weakness is the technique’s ritual-like nature. She preferably performs this technique in an isolated place, guarded from potential dangers. So, is her technique even worth bringing into combat?

Is Utahime’s Technique Suited for Combat

When it comes to combat, Solo Forbidden Area is strictly a support technique in Jujutsu Kaisen. Even other Jujutsu sorcerers agree that this technique should be performed far from the front lines. Though the boon is significant and boosts other sorcerers immensely, the requirements for Utahime’s cursed technique to be optimal are also a huge obstacle in direct combat.

However, that doesn’t mean her technique lacks value in Jujutsu society. Cursed energy varies between individuals, and anything that enhances it is a valuable asset in Jujutsu Kaisen. Even for Gojo Satoru, the greatest sorcerer of modern times, an increase in cursed energy is a usable resource, especially when dealing with the main antagonist, Sukuna.

In terms of combat, Utahime’s cursed technique falls squarely in the support role. If Jujutsu Kaisen were an RPG game, Utahime would be the full support character who buffs the DPS and helps the party finish the big boss faster. Although she must be protected and is not suited for direct combat, her role is significant and cannot be overlooked.

Conclusion

Iori Utahime’s cursed technique has a unique role in Jujutsu Kaisen. It ties her strictly to a full support role for other Jujutsu sorcerers who dive into combat. Most of the time, whether in anime or any other story, action scenes often focus on characters exchanging blows. However, Solo Forbidden Area is a nod to the often overlooked supporting role.

Utahime’s cursed technique is another testament to how creative Gege Akutami is in crafting the series’ power system. Jujutsu Kaisen has one of the most diverse power systems in anime. Jujutsu sorcery comes in many forms, and every innate cursed technique adds depth to the characters.
