Acrobatic Silky in Dandadan is one of the series’ Yokai. However, there is more to her character behind all those scary looks.
One moment she’s here, then she’s suddenly over there. This yokai moves around so much, just in the blink of an eye. Acrobatic Silky is a yokai in Dandadan, and she has become one of the most impressionable characters from the series. This large, tall, and terrifying yokai made her debut in episode 6, where she can be seen lurking in the school, keeping her eyes on another character, Aira Shiratori.
However, what’s her deal anyway? Why is she stalking a high school student? When you become a target of a malicious spirit, that usually doesn’t end well. Moreover, knowing how dangerous a yokai in Dandadan could be, Aira should fear for her life. However, Acrobatic Silky’s story takes a turn in the stories. Here’s how Acrobatic Silky in Dandadan unfolds her true character and story.
How Dandadan Introduced Acrobatic Silky
Acrobatic Silky was first introduced when the story moved from Turbo Granny’s menace to a new journey where Momo and Okarun must find golden balls. It’s not just any golden ball. It’s specifically Okarun’s. Yes, unfortunately, Turbo Granny turned his privates into a couple of glowing spheres. However, someone else found it first, and it was Aira. Not long after that, fans can see the first appearance of Acrobatic Silky in Dandadan.
She then finally made her full appearance when Aira confronted Momo. The yokai proved to be a danger when she attacked Momo and Aira. Oddly enough, when she got a hold of those two, she was practically forcing Aira to call her “mom.” Thankfully, Okarun just got there, and a battle between Momo, Okarun, and Acrobatic Silky ensued.
Acrobatic Silky’s Power, Explained
As a yokai, Acrobatic Silky was able to do inhuman moves. She dodged Okarun’s lightning-fast attacks with ease, even to the point of grabbing him. This proved to be troublesome at first, and it looked like Acrobatic Silky was making light work of Okarun. Her agility and strength make her an unpredictable and quick opponent. Not only that, as a yokai, she can swallow her enemies whole, like a snake. Although, this move backfired later on.
The prime feature of her power is her hair. It acts like a set of extra limbs that can spread to wherever she demands to grab or push things away. In later episodes of Dandadan, this power became the defining feature of Aira’s transformation. Despite all these strengths, Turbo Granny still called Acrobatic Silky a “rookie nobody.” So, how would they compare against each other?
Who Is Stronger Between Acrobatic Silky and Turbo Granny
As mentioned before, Acrobatic Silky’s strength was nothing to brush off. Judging from the time she met Aira, at least she had been a yokai since her first encounter with Aira. However, it looked like Turbo Granny had been around for longer in the Dandadan world, considering that Turbo Granny had a giant crab earthbound spirit at her disposal.
Furthermore, Turbo Granny could merge with her earthbound spirit, making her more imposing. She also often showed up on various sites where a crime involving young girls occurred to console their spirits. This is a sign that Turbo Granny was a yokai who had concerns about a big issue and had been around for a long time to see that.
On the other hand, Acrobatic Silky’s only obsession was with Aira and nothing else. Although she might’ve been a spirit for longer, she only took a yokai form since knowing Aira. So, when Turbo Granny said Acrobatic Silky was a newcomer in the Yokai world, she was not wrong.
Acrobatic Silky’s Backstory
Acrobatic Silky’s violent and uncanny tendencies didn’t come out of nowhere, nor did she choose to have that. If anything, she was also a victim of tragic and unfortunate situations. Dandadan went deep into her backstory in episode 7 of the anime. Before turning into a yokai, she was a ghost of a deceased mother. Her death was also one of the saddest moments of the anime so far.
When she was alive, Acrobatic Silky lived as a single mother with a daughter. Because of her debt, she had to work multiple jobs by day. On top of that, she had to resort to offering sexual services to further financially support her family. Nevertheless, she fully dedicated herself to making sure her daughter had a good life. One day, she decided to buy her daughter a gift. However, her debtor was there and demanded payment.
Unable to pay, Acrobatic Silky was beaten up by the debtor, and her daughter was taken away. She was so badly injured, but still forced herself to chase the men who took her daughter. Unfortunately, her effort was in vain. Realizing that her daughter was gone forever, she decided to jump off a building. Sometime after this event, the now-ghost Acrobatic Silky met little Aira, who mistook the ghost for her deceased mother. This prompted Acrobatic Silky’s transformation into a yokai, as seen in the Dandadan anime and manga series.
Did Acrobatic Silky Reach Nirvana
By the end of their clash, Acrobatic Silky was defeated. However, it was not like Okarun, Momo, and Aira were free of a problem. Because Acrobatic Silky swallowed her, Aira was critically injured, and her aura was about to run out. However, the yokai offered her aura to redeem herself and also because she regretted hurting Aira. On top of that, she also felt the regret of not being able to protect her real daughter when she was alive.
There is something that Turbo Granny said that makes Dandadan’s yokai world a bit clearer. A yokai with immense negative emotions, such as regret, doesn’t get to move on to the afterlife. Instead, they would vanish as if they never existed in the first place.
Seeing what was happening and hearing what Turbo Granny said, Aira quickly hugged the yokai. Although she was hurt because of the yokai, she still wished Acrobatic Silky to rest in peace. So, in the yokai’s last moment, Aira called her “mom,” and the yokai vanished as soon as she embraced Aira. Aira promised to remember Acrobatic Silky and was able to alleviate the yokai’s regret, sending her to the afterlife.
Conclusion
Dandadan has a top-notch approach when it comes to depicting yokai. They’re not portrayed as one-dimensional and malicious beings. Instead, the yokai often have a nuanced and heartbreaking backstory behind their violent nature. This is especially noticeable in Acrobatic Silky’s case.
Acrobatic Silky started as a new threat to the main characters. However, her backstory in Dandadan is easily one of the best tragic moments in this season’s anime.
