There are a plethora of One Piece characters who we majorly get to know through flashbacks. This might give the perception that the characters are not memorable, but it is the contrary. These supporting characters stay for a short while but pack a punch with their screen time. Clover, in particular, is a distinctive addition to the list who majorly influenced the series and its future events. So, who is Clover in One Piece?

Cloud D. Clover is the head archaeologist in the Tree of Knowledge on Ohara. He was infamous for his research, and his eventual ending made waves in the fandom. Let us take a closer look at this character.

As a person carrying the Will of D, Clover was prophesied to be an opponent of the ruling powers and cause a great shift in the world. Staying true to this, Clover was a talented archaeologist who was researching the Poneglyphs and Void Century in One Piece.

He was a kind and caring person who shared a deep respect for all his colleagues and subordinates. At the same time, he was motivated by his curiosity about the unknown, as any researcher would be.

Hence, in the 5,000-year-old Tree of Knowledge in Ohara, he and other researchers set up base. This location had centuries’ worth of research and data related to every important event, including those the World Government had tried covering up.

Clover’s Impact on Robin

Clover had worked with Nico Olvia, a talented archaeologist in Ohara. When she left home to search for other Poneglyphs, he looked after her daughter, Nico Robin. As the two spent a lot of time together, Robin was influenced by Clover’s thirst for knowledge.

Actively supporting her in becoming an archaeologist herself, Clover gave her access to all their documents and research materials. However, he strictly prevented her from researching the Void Century. This also came from a place of care so she would not be targeted by the World Government.

Due to this, Robin saw him as a familial figure and carried on his ideals. She is one of the few in One Piece who can read Poneglyphs and guides Luffy to uncover the secrets of True History. While initially seeming cold, Robin had closed off her heart due to her traumatic past. Through the series, she also became considerate and protective, just like Clover.

How Did Clover Die

Robin’s traumatic past is connected directly to the deaths of Clover, her mother, and other archaeologists in Ohara. Clover possessed the unique ability to decipher Poneglyphs. Additionally, he knew the locations of the Ancient Weapons, the truth behind the Great Kingdom, and the World Government’s atrocities during the Void Century.

He had been arrested before, but the World Government had let him live to trap him and his allies. Finally, when Clover and all his fellow archaeologists were gathered in Ohara, they initiated a Buster Call. This was a destructive Marine attack that could rival an entire nation’s military.

The purpose of this attack was to demolish everything in sight, as they did to Ohara. While Clover and other residents tried their best to protect their research, it was all destroyed. In the process, Clover was shot dead while holding strong to his ideals.

Significance of Clover in One Piece

Clover might have been a minor character, but it is no exaggeration to call him one of the most influential figures in One Piece. He was connected to Monkey D. Dragon and motivated him and the revolutionaries to fight the World Government.

Being a close friend of Vegapunk, Clover’s death changed something in the scientist. Due to this, Vegapunk revealed several truths of the Void Century to the entire world in the Egghead Arc. This proved that many, along with Robin, were still carrying on his will and that of Ohara.

He depicted the struggle toward the pursuit of freedom and against oppressive authority. Despite facing the consequences of his actions, Clover persisted till the very end. This laid the foundations of the Straw Hats’ and Robin’s adventures in One Piece.

Conclusion

Clover symbolized intellectual resistance in One Piece and eventually paid for it with his life. Nevertheless, he was a firm believer in his cause, and his defiance still reverberates throughout the series. His story reminds us of the power of knowledge and the sacrifice made in its pursuit, making him an unforgettable figure in One Piece.
