Who is Licht in Black Clover? Explore why the character’s identity is confusing as well as his role in the series.

Licht was the leader of the Elf Tribe, who was killed in the past due to Zagred’s scheme but returns in the Elf Reincarnation Arc. Let us take a closer look at this.
Who Is Licht in Black Clover?
Licht was the kind and compassionate leader of the elves in Black Clover, married to the human Tetia. Having been acquainted with the first Wizard King, Lemiel, Licht promoted understanding and sought a world where humans and elves could live together in harmony.
Unfortunately, his dream was left unfulfilled when Zagred manipulated humans into massacring his entire tribe. To face the demon and prevent him from possessing his body, Licht himself turned into a demon. He was later tragically killed by his friend Lemiel while Zagred was sealed away.
Licht was an immensely powerful individual who held a four-leaf grimoire. However, witnessing the killing of his clan, he fell into despair and converted it into a five-leaf grimoire. This is the book that is later passed down to Asta, handing him his Anti-Magic powers.
Despite his complex history, Licht was a beloved figure who exuded wisdom and inspired loyalty. Due to his influence, the elves were pushed into action when reincarnating in the future.
Are Licht and Patolli the Same Person?
One of the biggest questions in Black Clover is whether Licht and Patolli are the same person. They look alike, and Patolli’s quest for vengeance would align with Licht witnessing the death of his clan.
However, Patolli is not the same person as Licht but lived in the same Elf Tribe led by him. Following their annihilation and Zagred casting a reincarnation spell, Patolli ends up sharing a body with William Vangeance. Patolli was under the mistaken impression that he had inherited Licht’s will and had to repay the humans for killing the elves.
As a result, he formed the Eye of the Midnight Sun and began reincarnating the rest of his allies. Hence, while Patolli took on the name of Licht to carry on his memories and unite the elves, he was not actually the same person. The real Licht was reincarnated later through the magic stones, though he was not as gentle as his past self.
Licht’s Strengths and Abilities
Elves are naturally more gifted magic users than humans, and as their leader, Licht was the most powerful among them. This serves as a testament to his great powers, which were enough to face both Asta and Yuno at the same time.
Licht’s main ability is Sword Magic, allowing him to generate strong swords and use them for close combat and long-distance flash attacks. His Origin Flash Barrage creates a plethora of destructive sword attacks, enough to face Zagred.
Licht’s sword skills are greatly complemented by his reinforcement magic, speed, and mana. He is able to easily float and freely manipulate his magic in ways very few can. Most notably, Asta’s Demon-Slayer, Demon-Dweller, and Demon-Destroyer Swords originally belonged to Licht. He showed great capability in wielding their nullifying ability. However, since he recognized his five-leaf grimoire to be Asta’s, he showed no particular attachment to the weapons.
Licht’s strength is boosted by his sense of duty and relentlessness in protecting his tribe. His resolve to uphold his people’s honor made him sacrifice himself and obtain Forbidden Magic, which foiled Zagred’s plans.
Licht’s Role in the Elf Reincarnation Arc
In the Elf Reincarnation Arc, Licht’s original spirit was brought to life through the magic stones. He initially seemed more apathetic, but watching his brethren fighting humans restored memories of their massacre. Hence, he intervened, facing off against Asta and Yuno and dominating the battle.
While he drove them away with his powers, he gradually began returning to his old ideals of justice and peace. Recognizing Zagred’s role in controlling everything from the background, he joined the main cast in their battle against the demon.
One of the most poignant moments during this confrontation came when Licht reunited with the awakened Lemiel and thanked him for their past relationship. Together, the two legendary figures unleashed a flurry of attacks against Zagred. With an awe-inspiring Demon-Dweller Sword: Conquering Eon, Licht delivered a fatal blow to the demon.
Zagred could regenerate from this, but Asta, Yuno, and Yami’s partnership defeated the demon’s monsters before the protagonist destroyed his heart. Hence, in a valiant effort by both elves and humans, an evil force infecting the world was killed.
Following this, the Reincarnation Magic was negated with the help of Asta’s Anti-Magic, sending Licht and all his followers back having avenged themselves. By highlighting the ideals of unity Licht carried throughout his life as well as his unparalleled strength, this character engraved himself onto fans’ hearts.
