Who is Liebe in Black Clover? Analyzing the character who gave Asta the Anti-Magic properties in the animanga series.
The Black Clover manga has progressed far more than the anime adaptation. The anime series has not released any content for years, which is why there was a massive shift in the community’s medium of choice. All anime-only fans have shifted to the manga, and they are quite happy with how the story has been progressing till now. As a result, certain characters have gained a lot of traction on various social media platforms. There is one character that comes to mind, and he is Liebe.
Liebe was introduced in the anime series. However, he didn’t receive much screen time since the anime adaptation stopped as soon as it entered the Spade Kingdom arc. Liebe is a relatively low-ranking devil who isn’t all that powerful on his own. However, he is the reason for Asta’s Anti-Magic abilities. Those who have watched the anime adaptation might not recollect the fact that he is connected to Asta’s mother as well.
Liebe is also the only devil that wants to vanquish every other devil in the series. He was ill-treated and tortured on a daily basis until one of the devils quite literally threw him into the Living World. Let’s take a closer look at who Liebe is and understand the kind of power he wields and lends to Asta on occasion.
More About Liebe in Black Clover
As mentioned earlier, Liebe is a low-ranking devil. He resided in the first level of the underworld, and he was constantly bullied. He didn’t have any magic, and weakness was scoffed at. This is why other devils would pick on him. He resided in Licht’s Grimoire, which had a five-leaf Clover marking on it. Asta managed to get his hands on this Grimoire and received Anti-Magic abilities. As the story progressed, Liebe met Asta and viewed him as a tool to exact his revenge. However, Asta managed to beat Liebe and forced a contract. Instead of forcing Liebe to do something he doesn’t like, Asta asks him to become his friend.
Following this, Liebe and Asta fought side-by-side on the battlefield. They have taken down some of the most powerful devils and Paladins in the series. Liebe has no Mana and can therefore utilize Anti-Magic abilities without feeling the negative effects. As mentioned earlier, Liebe is also connected to Asta’s mother. In fact, her love and care changed Liebe’s perception of devils.
Liebe hates his own kind and would do anything to kill all of them. This is why Liebe and Asta get along so well since they have similar intentions and motivations. It will be interesting to see Liebe’s evolution in the manga series and understand whether or not he could play a role in defeating the likes of Lucius Zogratis, the prime antagonist of the manga series.
Liebe’s Connection to Asta in Black Clover
As mentioned earlier, Liebe is connected to Asta. Their connection goes further than just the Devil-Binding Contract. Asta was going to live a life with no Mana. He wanted to become the Wizard King even if he didn’t have the ability to use magic. His perseverance would have only gotten him so far. However, everything changed when Asta received Licht’s five-leaf Clover Grimoire. Liebe resided within the Grimoire and that’s how Asta was able to use the Anti-Magic sword in the series.
Liebe was destined to meet Asta because he first encountered his mother. Asta’s mother had a unique condition wherein she drained Mana from people around her. This is why she abandoned her child and lived a life of seclusion. It was at this point when Liebe encountered Licita, and then went on to meet Asta. Now, Liebe and Asta are bound by a contract allowing both of them to share their powers as equals.
Liebe’s Abilities in Black Clover
As mentioned earlier, Liebe had no Mana in him. While this put him at a massive disadvantage at first, it allowed him to use Anti-Magic without feeling the negative effects of it. He is able to imbue the Anti-Magic properties onto swords and use them in combat. The lack of Mana also allows him to pass through realms—something even the strongest of devils struggled to do. One of Liebe’s most useful abilities is Unite. This is a consequence of the Devil-Binding Contract shared between Asta and him.
It allows the duo to merge and drastically increase their Anti-Magic abilities. Their synchronization amplifies their Anti-Magic abilities, allowing Asta to quite literally take on some of the toughest demons in the series. At first, this technique only lasts for 5 minutes. Following this, Asta suffers from debilitating body pain which prevents him from entering this form. However, as time progresses, the duo will be able to increase the duration of this technique.
Liebe’s Backstory in Black Clover
Liebe was thrown into the Living World in Black Clover. That’s when he met Licita, who happened to be Asta’s mother. She was kind and caring, nursing Liebe back to his regular self. Her kindness completely changed his perspective because he was tormented every day in the Underworld. However, Lucifero was informed about Liebe’s situation and decided to take over his body. Licita intervened, which angered Lucifero. He controlled Liebe and forced his hand into her vitals, killing her. However, moments before her death, she sealed him in Licht’s Grimoire. This is why Liebe wants to exact revenge and kill every single demon out there that resides in the Underworld.
Conclusion
Liebe is one of the only demons that fans love in the series. Despite his lack of powers, his conviction has taken him far in the series. He also helped Asta on various occasions. Seeing these two share a tight-knit bond appeals to the fanbase. Liebe might not be the strongest devil in Black Clover. However, he could be the difference maker, helping Asta take down Lucius Zogratis and everyone else who follows him.
