Originally thought to be a minor character, Hirofumi Yoshida has quickly risen to be a more recognizable figure in Chainsaw Man. While first appearing in Chainsaw Man Part 1, Yoshida has taken on a much more prominent role in the second part. So, who is Yoshida in Chainsaw Man?

Yoshida is a Public Safety Devil Hunter who becomes Denji’s caretaker at school in Chainsaw Man Part 2. Let us take a look at what this means.

Who Is Yoshida in Chainsaw Man?

Even after appearing on screen multiple times, Yoshida remains an enigma to most. He was originally a specialist private hunter and was tasked with looking after Denji’s wellbeing in the International Assassins Arc. He is calm, confident, and often carries an ominous smile.

Unlike his mysterious goals, Yoshida is straightforward and often reaches the crux of the issue. During conversations with Fami, he never enjoys beating around the bush. Additionally, he might be easygoing at times, but Yoshida can be extremely ruthless in order to achieve his wishes.

In Chainsaw Man Part 1, the character exits after the death of Quanxi, where he blindfolds himself when Makima brutally kills her. In Chainsaw Man Part 2, his role has ascended from a supporting one to a primary one. He is still in charge of looking after Denji, but this is mainly to prevent the Chainsaw Devil from coming out.

His main objective is never revealed, as he often just keeps appearing and disappearing, but the series has hinted that it may be tied to the Death Devil. The only time Yoshida’s shell seemed to crack was when he asked Denji if Chainsaw Man would eat the Death Devil for the good of the people.

Hence, just like most characters in the dark world of Chainsaw Man, his past is also likely filled with tragedy.

Yoshida’s Relationship with Denji

One might think Yoshida’s considerable time with Denji would lead to friendship, but Chainsaw Man avoids ordinary routes. Originally, Yoshida was simply Denji’s guard, casually spending time with him to mask the seriousness of his mission.

In Chainsaw Man Part 2, we get a much more in-depth look at him, but unfortunately, this doesn’t help in figuring out the vagueness of his character either. At school, Yoshida oversees Denji to ensure Chainsaw Man is never brought out. At the same time, he seems to show care for the protagonist’s desires as he helps him find a date and live a regular life. His actions in the current arc, however, prove the opposite.

Since Denji had used the devil inside him, Yoshida subdues him and sends him to be dismembered at a facility. He also takes Nayuta into custody when fully aware of her importance to Denji.

Therefore, Yoshida’s twisted bond with Denji cannot be classified by like and dislike. He shows compassion for Denji at certain points but is mainly driven by his motive of not letting Chainsaw Man come out. For the sake of this, he is willing to take out anyone in Denji’s life, even if it mentally breaks the protagonist.

Yoshida’s Strengths and Abilities

His playful face may suggest otherwise, but Yoshida is a deceptively strong character in Chainsaw Man. He is proficient at hand-to-hand combat and could match up to Quanxi, one of the most skilled fighters in the series.

He also combines this with his analytical mind and swordplay. Yoshida is very intuitive and knows the right time to act. He catches Asa Mitaka off guard and cuts her arm off while moving to restrain her before Yoru’s power is used. When this failed and the tides were turning, he did not stay adamant and swiftly retreated.

Yoshida’s main strength, of course, is his contract with the Octopus Devil. By crossing his fingers, he can summon the tentacles of the devil to attack enemies and defend himself. By using its ink attacks, Yoshida can create smokescreens while catching opponents by surprise. The tentacles are very sturdy and prove useful to bind enemies too.

Yoshida plays a crucial role in Chainsaw Man Part 2, but the nature of this role remains unclear. His harsh actions against Denji and disregard for Denji’s loved ones have led many to suspect Yoshida as the hidden antagonist of this part.

Others believe Yoshida is a vital ally to Denji, though his complex feelings stop him from actively supporting the protagonist. His cryptic conversations about the prophecy of Nostradamus, which predicts the end of humanity, also suggest he is working for a much higher power.

Conclusion

Hirofumi Yoshida is a multifaceted individual whose strength, intellect, and unknown motives make him a pivotal addition to Chainsaw Man. He has gone from being Denji’s protector to a shadowy presence in the second part. This has managed to capture the intrigue of the entire fanbase as we wait to see if he is an ally or adversary to the main character.
