Demon Slayer is one of the most beloved new-generation anime, taking us to a dark world living under the threat of bloodthirsty demons. The protagonist, Tanjiro, is a kind boy who loses all his loved ones except for his sister Nezuko—who turned into a demon herself. Resolved to protect her and avenge his family, he joins the Demon Slayer Corps, an elite group dedicated to fighting demons.

Throughout his journey, Tanjiro meets several memorable acquaintances who join his adventures. Among them, Zenitsu is a very distinctive character whose growth and development help enrich the narrative. So, who is Zenitsu Agatsuma in Demon Slayer?

Zenitsu Agatsuma is one of Tanjiro’s closest friends who is a multifaceted character embodying humor, vulnerability, and sheer willpower. His transformation over the course of the series is one of its highlights. Let us take a closer look at this character.

During his introduction, Zenitsu was a timid and cowardly boy who dreaded training with his mentor, Jigoro. He was filled with self-doubt and low self-esteem due to his fear of dying. Nevertheless, as he spends more time in the Demon Slayer Corps, his sense of duty and need to protect others shows up.

This reveals another side of his personality, an incredibly powerful swordsman with a unique fighting style. Early in the series, Zenitsu could access the true potential of his strength only when he fell asleep, letting him calm his nerves. However, with each passing arc and his experiences, he learns to train himself and be useful while retaining his consciousness.

The sum of Zenitsu’s training shows up in his main fight against Kaigaku in the Infinity Castle Arc, where he faced the Upper-Rank Demon with nothing but his own spirit. This is an emotional battle where Zenitsu wishes to display everything his departed master has imparted to him.

Hence, Zenitsu’s development in Demon Slayer from an unreliable figure to a more mature person who gains one of the biggest achievements in the final battle forms the core of his character.

Zenitsu Agatsuma’s Relationship with Tanjiro and Inosuke

A major contributor to Zenitsu’s emotional development in Demon Slayer is his relationship with Tanjiro and Inosuke. Zenitsu frequently looks up to Tanjiro as a source of inspiration and leadership. He was originally taken in by Tanjiro’s desire to save others, inspiring Zenitsu himself to make a change to his personality. Hence, what was once just overreliance on Tanjiro due to his cowardice soon becomes a deeper bond of growing stronger and working together in battles.

Inosuke and Zenitsu, on the other hand, share a very different relationship. Inosuke tends to not be an overthinker and jumps straight into battle. This completely contradicts Zenitsu’s personality of thinking of every possible solution before fighting. While Inosuke is hard-headed and violent, Zenitsu is loud and cries easily. This makes them not get along well.

However, the trio end up forming mutual respect for each other in order to achieve success against the demons. Regardless of their strengths and weaknesses, they don’t put each other down and motivate each other to become stronger.

Zenitsu Agatsuma’s Strengths and Abilities in Demon Slayer

Zenitsu’s main ability in Demon Slayer is the swift and effective Thunder Breathing technique. Among its traditional six forms, Zenitsu can only use the first form—Thunderclap and Flash. This lets him unsheathe his sword and dash forward at great speeds to cut through his opponents.

Throughout the series, Zenitsu develops variations of Thunderclap and Flash, such as the “Sixfold,” “Eightfold,” and “Godspeed” versions, demonstrating his adaptability in battle. The moment he shows his prowess the most is during his battle with Kaigaku, where he develops his own form of the Thunder Breathing technique, titled Seventh Form: Flaming Thunder God. This unleashes a devastating slash at unparalleled speeds, making him resemble a lightning bolt.

To pair with his Thunder Breathing, Zenitsu’s speed, reflexes, and durability have been honed greatly over years of harsh training. He can unleash the Thunderclap and Flash multiple times, a feat requiring great stamina. Additionally, Zenitsu’s sensory perceptions, particularly his hearing, are greatly enhanced. He can hear sounds and noises from great distances, letting him prepare beforehand for any dangers.

Zenitsu Agatsuma’s Final Fate in Demon Slayer

Zenitsu’s final solo battle in Demon Slayer came during the Infinity Castle Arc, where he unveiled his Seventh Form and avenged his master by defeating Kaigaku. Following this, he took part in the concluding battle against Muzan along with the remaining Demon Slayers.

Even when all the other Hashira are taken out of action or brutally wounded, he fights to the very end along with Tanjiro. Through his quickness, he attacks Muzan, blocks his tendrils, and is of great assistance to the protagonist. Due to this, all his allies were finally able to resist the Demon King’s powers and expose him to the sun, causing his death.

While Zenitsu despairs soon after, watching Tanjiro’s demonic appearance, this doesn’t last long as the Demon Slayers restore his humanity. Following all the chaos, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Tanjiro all live together happily. He is able to live his ideal peaceful life along with his wife, Nezuko, and has descendants who carry on his legacy in the new world he fought hard for.

Conclusion

Zenitsu Agatsuma in Demon Slayer exemplifies the journey of an underdog who defies expectations. From his humble beginnings as a cowardly and self-doubting individual, Zenitsu evolves into a courageous and skilled Demon Slayer.

While many may have originally found him annoying, his development throughout the series made most fans his admirers. Due to this, Zenitsu remains a beloved character who adds richness and depth to Demon Slayer.
