The action-horror genre is a bit of a mixed bag and has historically been deemed the black sheep of the horror genre. For some, it is too action-heavy to be scary, while for others, it is too scary to enjoy the action. Very few games strike the balance correctly, but when they do, nothing comes close to the adrenaline rush they provide.

This genre has seen some heavy hitters over the last few generations with the likes of Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, Dead Space trilogy, and much more. Fast forward to 2025, the developers have shifted focus to a more survival-focused horror experience, which has left action-horror fans in dismay. Still, there remains an impressive backlog of action-horror games to play in 2025, which we shall list below.

1) Resident Evil 4 (2023)

The original Resident Evil 4 was a polarizing game in the survival-horror community due to its aggressive push towards action horror. Its remake, too, follows along the same path by perfectly blending Capcom’s signature horror with third-person action gameplay.

Resident Evil 4 features a spooky setting with several monsters and eldritch horrors but gives you the tools to run riot over them and turn them into a joke. Leon’s wise-cracking personality eases up the horror while also making you feel like a badass. With an impressive selection of weapons, no action-horror game comes close to RE4.

2) Dying Light

Released in 2015, Dying Light throws you into the city of Harran, a beautiful tourist destination now overrun by the undead. With the streets flooded with zombies, your only way to go about is through the roof, which sets up Dying Light’s unique parkour gameplay.

Parkour across roofs and jump down to smash zombies before climbing back up. Don’t get too comfortable though—once the sun sets, the Volatiles pop out. These terrifying super zombies are nigh-invincible and can run as fast as you. Killing them is not an option, so run as fast as you can to survive the terror.

3) The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us series has always been known for its narrative first and gameplay second. While the narrative is the series’ selling point, its gameplay is no less than stellar, especially when you consider the second game. The AI that hones in on you makes for tense action encounters, and the limited ammo only amplifies the adrenaline rush. All the weapons pack a punch, and the sound design adds the much-needed oomph to take it to the next level. In the horror department, too, TLOU2 is no slouch. The infected encounters are horrifying, and one wrong move can lead to your throat being ripped out.

4) Dead Space (2023)

Resident Evil 4 in Space was the main hook when Visceral Games hopped on to make Dead Space, and it shows. The game’s critically acclaimed remake, too, follows the same path while faithfully remaking the original. The game features an expanded spaceship filled with horrors, ripe for exploration. The weapons, especially, are all creative. There are very few guns in Dead Space. Most weapons you use are modified engineering tools, adding to the hopelessness of the situation. The combat is exactly like RE4’s, so if you like that, you will love Dead Space.

5) Control

While most of the titles on this list lean towards bio-horror, Remedy’s Control tugs at your fear of the unknown – your fear of what may live among us. Based on the SCP Foundation and surrounding lore, Control throws you into a supernatural bureau where the supernatural now runs free.

With a supernatural special pistol in your hand, it is now your job to clean up the mess in the building. You encounter all sorts of unexplained entities on your journey. As the challenge mounts, you’re given stronger weapons and powers to deal with the threat. We recommend Control for anyone who loves all things SCP.
