Endnight Games’ The Forest offers a perfect blend of open-world survival crafting and horror elements. In the mysterious forest, you can build and craft various unique structures, including defensive traps and survival tools. Surviving in the forest on your own can be challenging, especially for beginners, as you will constantly face threats such as mutants and cannibals from all directions.

The early hours of The Forest are crucial, as they teach you how to evade dangers and adapt to the intense horror environment. This beginner guide provides essential tips you need to know to become the ultimate lone survivor in The Forest.

1) Keep Track of Your Basic Needs

The first essential element for survival is to track your basic vitals. Similar to most modern survival games, you must take care of your basic needs in The Forest, which include hunger, thirst, and sleep. These vital meters are located in the lower right corner along with the stamina and armor bars. Don’t let the hunger and thirst meters fall drastically, as it worsens your survival experience.

During the early hours of the game, blueberries are your primary source to satiate your basic needs, as they fill up your hunger and thirst meters significantly. However, not all berries are edible, as some cause negative effects. Additionally, you can drink rainwater or boiled water to fill your thirst meter.

2) Pick Up Every Resource

The Forest allows players to craft and build a variety of structures, each having a unique purpose. For instance, structures like Shelters and Cabins allow players to save their game and record their progression.

All the materials and resources you come across can be used throughout your gameplay for multiple purposes. So, it is recommended to pick up all resources, as you may not know what resources you will need in the future. Note that the inventory in The Forest is not weight-based; instead, it is quantity-based. Every item in your inventory has a limit, and the excess items of that kind will be automatically dropped while picked up

Additionally, you can make use of the cogwheel icon in the inventory to find out the available crafting recipes. While placing any item in the crafting spot, hover over the cogwheel to learn about the available recipes and materials.

3) Use Red Paint and Effigies To Trick the Cannibals

Fighting is not the only option against cannibals. Moreover, the survival game features several unique methods to outsmart the cannibals. Using red paint is an effective way to counter cannibals in The Forest. It can be found in various locations, such as the main cannibal village. Applying the red paint brings some unique interactions between you and the cannibals, as they ignore, worship, or bow down to you.

However, this paint will be washed off once you enter the water. You can also construct effigies and light them with fire to keep cannibals away. Keep in mind that several cannibals won’t attack you on sight during the early gameplay. However, picking a fight with them increases your hostility toward them, making them a constant threat in the future as you progress.

4) Don’t Eat and Drink Before Sleeping

Exploring at nighttime is definitely not recommended, as you will have no visual clue what you are up to. If you are in proximity to any light source, then perhaps you will soon be surrounded by many mutants and cannibals. So, the best way to spend the nighttime is to sleep unless you want to feel the ultimate haunting experience.

While consuming food or drinking water before sleeping seems like a good idea, that is not the case in this horror survival game. No matter if you fill up the hunger and thirst meters at night, you will always wake up empty in the morning. Instead, save some food and water for the morning and start your day fresh by satiating your basic needs.

5) Stick Markers Are Essential for Your Survival

The Forest acts more like a base-building game, which features unique structures to build. Each comes with a unique purpose, unlocking more possibilities for your survival. For example, the wooden bench serves as a constant way to replenish stamina, while the skull lamps provide a permanent light source.

However, one important structure is stick markers. These can be placed and customized with any color to mark specific locations while exploring. Based on your needs and preferences, they can be used for marking locations you plan to explore or have already visited. Additionally, you can use them as a point of reference while navigating new areas, ensuring you don’t get lost in the wilds.
