The former is a longer-range weapon, while the latter is effectively a shotgun. Pulling a gun out during battle is a power move (you will lose aura) that is sure to grant you victory. The guns are especially useful against the undead that roam the islands as they overwhelm through numbers. Using guns lets you stay at a distance and wipe them out.
