Quite a few horror games came out in 2024. If you are a fan of the genre, take note of this list and play them if you haven’t already!
We can’t say that the year 2024 was crawling and creeping with horror games. Those who are invested in this genre probably wanted more titles before the year came to a close. However, it’s more about the quality than the quantity. And the industry did quite the number this year in terms of the ‘quality’ of these horror games.
While we would always suggest that you try out all games that interest you, the list that we are about to present is simply asking you to prioritize those titles if you want to experience a good horror game. Kindly note that the list contains the writer’s subjective opinions and is not in any specific order.
1. Silent Hill 2 Remake
Konami brought back the nightmares of every ’90s kid when they released this remake. You would think that as a grown-up, the Pyramid Heads won’t seem so scary, but that is far from the truth. That’s the case with me, at least. I was still holding my controller close to me whenever a Pyramid Head entered the scene.
The remake kept a lot of horror elements, with just enough freshness to keep the new audience interested. Moreover, the graphical upgrade just made the experience even better. If you haven’t played the remake yet, we highly suggest that you do!
2. Alone in the Dark
AITD is one of the horror games of 2024 that we recommend you try out. Originally released in 1992, the gaming industry decided this was another old horror game that needed a remake. As a result, they recreated it with modern graphics and gameplay to give us a true survival experience.
The story follows Emily Hartwood (Jodie Comer) and Edward Carnby (David Harbour) as they travel to Derceto Manor to search for Emily’s uncle. Saying anything besides this may spoil things for you. So, make sure to check it out!
3. The Casting of Frank Stone
The Casting of Frank Stone was a game released later in 2024, developed by Supermassive Games. The studio is popular for creating choice-based horrors like The Quarry, Until Dawn, and The Dark Pictures Anthology. What’s even better is that they work on Dead by Daylight, which shares the universe with The Casting of Frank Stone.
This new game from Supermassive lets us explore beyond the fog and the walls of DBD and choose our own fate. There is a new cast of characters that you can experiment with. So, have fun bringing Halloween to you once again, and uncovering the mystery behind a series of grotesque murders.
4. The Outlast Trials
Outlast fans have experienced what true horror feels like when you are left in a dangerous world without weapons, and searching for camera batteries. Well, The Outlast Trials doesn’t bring back the classic battery-hunting with it, but the horror elements in the game remain intact in this project, which was released earlier in 2024.
Set in the same universe as the rest of the Outlast games, TOT lets you go through the trials of Murkoff alone or in a team if your friends are courageous enough. While the game is indeed horror, playing it with friends is also a fun experience that you shouldn’t miss out on!
5. A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead
A Quiet Place has the perfect environment for a survival horror game. And to our surprise, Stormind Games ended up developing one! It is safe to say that fans of the Quiet Place universe, and horror games both will be happy with this experience.
Death Angels, or Listeners, as the human survivors call them, are not sapient creatures with ulterior motives. Instead, they are just ensuring the survival of their species on Earth, in the most brutal way possible.
Players must stay quiet at all times because the game can access their microphones to ensure a realistic experience. Oh, and talking of realism, the protagonist is an asthma patient. I had trouble staying ‘quiet’ in this game because of the jumpscares. I challenge you to try out your luck as well!
6. Still Wakes the Deep
There is something ominous about a silent, foggy, and abandoned oil rig that screams ‘cosmic horror’. The Chinese Room took the liberty of crafting a horror beyond human comprehension and put it inside a floating oil rig. To make things worse, the protagonist is just a regular human being, with no weapons and/or superpowers.
If you liked the Xenomorph mechanic in Alien Isolation, you are going to love Still Wakes the Deep. The monster here gets more powerful with each hour you spend in the game until you reach the end. The game is fairly linear, though, so there’s not a lot to explore. However, it packs a perfect punch for horror game fans.
I love Lovecraftian Horror Done Right. And, Still Wakes the Deep itches the perfect spot. The only thing that will allow the protagonist to meet his family is his indomitable human spirit. But would it be enough to survive here?
