The Insect Glaive has always been a niche weapon type in the Monster Hunter series, akin to the Bowguns. While capable of dishing out impressive amounts of damage, the Insect Glaive features a rather complicated moveset as well as a Kinsect synergy system, which can be a tad cumbersome to grasp for a newcomer. However, with the latest title in the series, Capcom has made some really clever adjustments to the weapon in order to make it appeal to players. The Insect Glaive’s new Focus Strike, as well as Offset skills alone, make it worthwhile even for a newcomer. However, despite the new additions, the weapon still requires a fair bit of skill to use it to its full potential.

Furthermore, to properly use the Insect Glaive, you also need a build that perfectly synergizes with its strengths. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to craft one of the best Insect Glaive builds in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Monster Hunter Wilds Insect Glaive Overview

The Insect Glaive is a really interesting weapon, as it serves as both a close-range melee weapon and a long-range damage-dealer. Although the weapon’s base damage isn’t anything to write home about, it becomes incredibly powerful when you factor in the Kinsects. The Kinsects play a vital role in the Insect Glaive’s overall damage output and efficiency. Furthermore, the weapon also has plenty of aerial movesets, which come in incredibly handy against fast-moving monsters. The Insect Glaive, when used properly, combines the damage output of a Switch Axe or a Long Sword, paired with the agility of the Dual Blades or the Bow.

Furthermore, the Insect Glaive also scales incredibly well with elemental damage. However, using the Insect Glaive takes a lot of practice. Although the aerial combos are quite useful, they aren’t easy to pull off in the heat of the battle. You can check out our dedicated Insect Glaive guide for more information on the weapon’s controls, combos, and more. In addition to its complexity, the Insect Glaive isn’t an easy weapon to control, even with the Focus Mode. Lastly, unlike the Switch Axe or other similar melee weapons, the Insect Glaive doesn’t have any active defensive capabilities.

Here’s a list of the pros and cons of the Insect Glaive in Monster Hunter Wilds:

ProsCons
High elemental damage output.Lacks in terms of base raw damage.
Offers incredibly mobility.Combos can be difficult to learn.
Has access to passive buffs via Kinsect.Reliance on Kinsect adds an extra layer of complication.

Overview of the Insect Glaive build

For our Insect Glaive build, we aimed to tackle two of the major downsides of the weapon type — lower base damage and difficulty in controlling the weapon’s attacks. The first order of business for any Insect Glaive build is to buff the elemental damage, which we did using Paralysis Attack Level 3.

We used an Artian Insect Glaive with Paralysis status. The reason behind choosing paralysis is that it’s quite effective against some of the toughest endgame monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds (including Tempered Arkveld and Tempered Gore Magala). Furthermore, we also used Critical Status Level 3 and Stamina Thief Level 3 to further boost the weapon’s efficiency.

Monster Hunter Wilds Insect Glaive Build Explained

Here are the primary factors that our Insect Glaive build focuses on:

  • Increased elemental damage
  • Immobilize monsters
  • Capitalize on wounds

Here’s an explanation of how these factors come into play for the Insect Glaive build.

Increased Elemental Damage

Elemental damage is a forte of the Insect Glaive, and to capitalize on that, we’ve used both Paralysis Attack and Critical Status skills in the build. Paralysis Attack boosts the overall status damage and build-up speed (Paralysis). Whereas Critical Status increases the elemental (status) damage dealt with each critical hit.

To guarantee critical hits, you can also work Expert or Critical Boost Jewels into the build. However, given the speed of Insect Glaive’s attacks, 5% Affinity should be more than enough to land quite a few critical hits. You can go for an Affinity-based Artian Insect Glaive as well, at the cost of lower base DPS.

Immobilize Monsters

Controlling the Insect Glaive, especially in midair, is quite difficult. The Vault combos, if not timed properly, can often leave you vulnerable and result in you missing your attacks. To help you land successful hits on the monster, we’ve used the Stamina Thief skill. Stamina Thief essentially exhausts monsters, slowing them down significantly and making it easier for you to land your attacks.

Furthermore, once exhausted, a monster often cannot use its more powerful attacks, which grants you a passive defensive boost. In addition to Stamina Thief, Paralysis Attack also helps immobilize monsters by, well, “paralyzing” them, momentarily.

Capitalize on Wounds

Wounds are an essential part of Monster Hunter Wilds’ combat. To help create wounds much easier, we’re using Partbreaker as well as Flayer. Furthermore, to capitalize on the damage dealt by wounds, we’re also using Weakness Exploit, which works incredibly well for elemental builds. Wounds are also a great way to inflict status blights on monsters, which then allows you to easily exhaust or paralyze them.

How To Use the Best Insect Glaive Build in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Kinsect

Here are some tips to help you use the Insect Glaive build to its fullest potential in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • With the Insect Glaive, mounting monsters is incredibly easy, and not something you would want to start an encounter with. Instead, start the fight with a sneak attack, and after that, immediately launch your Kinsect. Most monsters follow up a sneak attack with a regular single or double-hit combo, which you can easily punish using the Offset ability.
  • Using the Insect Glaive, you don’t want to linger too close to the monster. Instead, a good majority of your time will be spent midair. While you’re in midair, you can either launch a volley of attacks using your Kinsect or you can mount the monster. Do keep an eye on your stamina gauge while using Vault Dance.
  • Since we’re using the Paralysis Kinsect, you can use it to easily Paralyze the monster. The Descending Slash is a great way to not only create wounds but also inflict status effects easily. Make sure you’re not spamming Vault Dance. Use it only when there is an opening.
  • If you find the monster exhausted, take that time to capitalize on dealing the most amount of damage possible. Vault Dance, followed by a Descending Slash, is a great way to quickly deal a ton of damage. You can also use the Leaping Strike combo (Focus Strike) to destroy wounds and deal a lot of damage to the monster.
