With the impending release of Civilization 7, the long-awaited strategy game, both long-time fans of the series as well as new players will be excited to jump into the latest iteration. However, you need to know about the various settings in the game options if you are looking for the optimal gameplay experience. Here, we will take a look at the best settings in the Game Menu that can help you enjoy your time as you build your own civilization.

Best Difficulty Settings in Civilization 7

The game will have six distinct difficulty options to choose from when it launches. These are the following:

Difficulty Setting NameOrder of Difficulty
ScribeEasiest difficulty level in the game.
GovernorDefault difficulty level suited for most players.
ViceroySlightly more challenging than default settings
SovereignSignificantly harder than default difficulty settings
ImmortalExtremely difficult
DeityFor expert Civilization players only.

If Civilization 7 is your first foray into real-time strategy games, you should stick to the Governor difficulty setting. Or, you can even drop down further to Scribe, although this might make things too easy. It is better to avoid the higher difficulty settings, at least until you have mastered all elements of the game.

Keep in mind that even in the higher difficulty settings, the game AI will remain the same. However, the challenge arises as you will be constantly forced to maximize the different game systems as you go up the difficulty settings.

Choose the Right Speed Setting

You can choose from four speed options in the game, namely, Quick, Standard, Epic, and Marathon. The speed you choose will determine the number of turns that will advance an age within the game. So, it will also decide how long it will take for you to complete a playthrough of Civilization 7. We recommend picking the Standard speed, where civilizations will advance after around 120 to 150 moves.

Keep in mind that the exact moves will vary based on the Age you are tackling. You start the game off in the Antiquity Age and progress to Exploration and Modern Ages. The Standard speed will help you experience a balanced gameplay experience.

Select Proper Map Types

Another important setting that you need to choose before you can play is the map type. Here are the six map types available:

Map TypeWhat It Includes
Continents PlusTwo big land masses separated by smaller islands in the middle. This is the default map type for the game.
ContinentsTwo big land masses with no islands in the middle.
ArchipelagoRather than having two big land masses, there are several smaller land masses that are interconnected.
FractalLesser land masses and more of these are randomly shaped.
ShuffleRandomized generation of maps
One standard Continents map, while another land mass is shaped randomly.

We recommend you choose the default map setting here, Continents Plus. This type of map would be best for the Exploration Age and will encourage exploration to find new resources and other civilizations.

The Right Map Size

In Civilization 7, the size of the map is also another integral factor to consider. The size you choose will decide how many players can be in the game at once. For instance, Standard size will allow 8 players, while Small and Tiny sizes will support 6 and 4, respectively.

The Small map size should be the right place to start. With 6 players, you can engage in plenty of trade discussions without all of the elements becoming too exhaustive for you to track.

So, that’s all you need to know about the best settings for the game. Also, check out the system requirements for Civilization 7 to ensure you can run the game.
