It has been over half a decade since the release of Borderlands 3, and since then, fans of the series have had very little to go on except for the occasional crumbs dropped on social media by Randy Pitchford, the founder of Gearbox. Fans can now rejoice as the long wait is over, and Borderlands 4 finally has a trailer. The much-anticipated trailer of Borderlands 4 made its world premiere during The Game Awards 2024.

The trailer showcases lots of exciting new content, and fans of the series are seemingly in for an amazing ride. The game will be released on PS5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2025. In this trailer breakdown, we shall go over the Borderlands 4 trailer as seen in The Game Awards 2024 (TGA 2024).

Borderlands 4 Trailer Breakdown

Timeless Visuals

The Borderlands 4 trailer showcased a lot of gameplay elements, as well as its various new environments and enemies. The game’s visuals are just as expected, to the delight of fans, staying true to its unique cel-shaded art style. The environments, however, have had a major uplift and seem to be pushing the limits of technology with sprinkles of photo-realistic elements.

The decision to stick with cel-shaded characters and environments, now enhanced with near photo-realistic elements, gives the game a timeless look, and we hope the rest of the elements match up to it.

Large Hordes of Enemies

The trailer was war and screamed war with the abundance of shots of what seemed like massive armies. The constant shots of massive hordes of enemies rushing toward the main characters suggest that Gearbox will be pushing all the platforms to their limits with how many enemies they can put on screen. This will also make for interesting gameplay changes, allowing classes like the tanks to flourish with their machine guns and turrets, as seen in previous games.

Several Locations

The game showcased several locations throughout the trailer. These locations varied from vast fields to urban hubs, cities, and bars. There was also, surprisingly, a large emphasis on landscape shots that showed the moons and stars of the world of Borderlands. Based on our count alone, 36 different locations were showcased in the trailer. We cannot wait to visit these in-game.

Four Main Characters

Lastly, the trailer showcased the four main characters who will fill the roles of soldier, tank, healer, and sword-wielding assassin.  The characters, based on the trailer, will play just about as you’d expect from the four core classes in a Borderlands game, and that is not a bad thing. One character runs around with a sword, and another is a large hunk wielding a machine gun. The other two sport mid-range combat and showcase firepower.
