Sea of Thieves is a game focused on exploration, plunder, and messing around with other players online. The game doesn’t have a lore that matters too much. Most of your experience will revolve around the chaos that always follows your adventures overboard. However, it is also possible to go on solo adventures.

The developers have allowed people to be greedy pirates without having to split gold among crew members. For this, you must pick your ship and select whether you will have a Closed Crew or an Open Crew. There is a major difference between the two modes.

Having an Open Crew would mean—you will be matched with up to three shipmates to fill your quarters. These are people from around the globe who are looking for a ship to share with others. Although fun, you might not always want to socialize in multiplayer games. That’s what the other option is for.

If people select the Closed Crew option instead, they will be allowed to play Sea of Thieves solo without the game randomly filling in the spots. However, be wary of the challenges that come along with it.

Sea of Thieves is fun but is also filled with dangers around every corner. When you are out being a solo pirate, your odds of surviving the cruel sea drop significantly. So, how do you balance things out? By being extra careful and using the following tips:

  • Operating a bigger ship can be difficult when you are exploring by yourself. So, try picking a ship that is compatible with one player only. Sloops will do a great job in such a situation. However, there is nobody to stop you from operating Brigantines or Galleons alone either.
  • Readily assume that all pirates in the game are out for your blood because they probably are. So, flee when you spot a full-fledged crew because you wouldn’t like the odds most of the time.
  • Keep your eyes on the horizon for approaching ships and steer clear of them as fast as you can.
  • Make sure to turn in your treasure as frequently as possible because you are already outnumbered and wouldn’t want to lose your profits.
  • Try not to leave your ship unattended for a long time. You wouldn’t want an enemy squad snooping around your business.
