In this guide, we shall go over Diplomacy in Civilization 7, one of the most important features in the game.
Civilization 7 is a strategy game that puts you in charge of building your own empire. You do so by building your own settlements, commanding armies, and conquering territories. But conquering and pillaging is only one facet of your empire expansion strategy. Maintaining cordial relations with other powerful empires is just as important if you wish to thrive, and this is where Civilization 7’s Diplomacy feature comes into play.
Diplomacy is a way of interacting with other empires in the game in an effort to maintain a healthy and reciprocated relationship. You can do so by forging alliances, establishing healthy trade exchanges, open borders, etc. Diplomacy in Civilization 7 works on the basis of Influence. This is a new currency introduced in the game and can be spent to influence Diplomacy. We shall discuss all of this in detail below.
How Does Influence Work in Civilization 7
Influence is a new currency in Civilization 7 and works much the same as the other currencies in the game. You earn Influence on a per-turn basis (10 per turn), which you can then spend to befriend Independent Powers. Diplomacy Actions in the game. There are four main Diplomacy Actions in the game:
- Endeavors: These are collaborative actions and are your main way of strengthening positive ties. These include actions such as research collaborations, sending military aid, reconciliation, and more.
- Sanctions: Much like real life, sanctions are a way to impose penalties on a state. Sanctions include hindering public morale and military production, denouncing ties, and more. These actions are taken as an act of enmity and will negatively impact your ties with a state.
- Treaties: Treaties are agreements that come into play when things are seemingly slipping out of hand. Essentially a band-aid solution, these treaties include enforcing open borders and improving trade relations.
- Espionage: A deplorable action that may lead to severe consequences, Espionage sees you infiltrating enemy territory to gain intel and steal technology. If caught, things can turn hostile, so only do so at your own risk.
Diplomacy and Relationships
How you choose to use your Influence inevitably impacts your relationships with other states. Other leaders can view you favorably or negatively depending on how you choose to exert your Influence. If you wish to keep things amicable, engaging in mutual Endeavors and improving relationships is important. Leaders, too, have their own agendas that you have to keep in mind while building a relationship.
Should things falter too much, your relationship with another state may turn hostile and could lead to war. You then have the option to formally declare a war, with both parties then seeking War Support. War impacts the Happiness of your settlements, so think it through before you unsheathe your blade for battle. Take note that declaring war while your relationship isn’t hostile will garner you less War Support, negatively impacting your settlements.
